Every family has different values and how every family is different. From the time I was little till now I never really understood the meaning of the word family values. I think of it as two things family and then values; family is basically the people I live with. The people that support them and love them, even their parents and siblings and other adults that live there. Values are what we have but family value put together is values that are traditionally learned or relearned within a family, for example those of high moral standards and discipline. Family values are different from other values from them having a connection with our family like only our family does it and live off by it. Also it can be passed down from generation to generation in our family, they can make up our behavior, help us make the right choices. Even if they don’t have enough money, like money isn’t the only thing that makes a family you can still be a family even people that live on the streets is still a family. They still will be there for them and will always have that strong bond no matter what they go through. In the article, “ Looking for work” it talks about how a nine year old boy that is ashamed of his life and he’s not old enough to understand that not every family is perfect, so he tries and goes out and looks for things to do, be eventually he learns to accept what he has and just make a great time out of it. Traditions are crucial to identities in order to preserve family values. Those values shape who we are. Without heritage and traditions, we are at risk of losing sight of who we are, and eventually those tenets will perish. In “Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker, three women internalize heritage differently; Dee doesn’t value her heritage, Maggie values her family’s heritage, and, in the end of the story, Mama realized the true embodiment and the meaning of heritage.
What is the importance of family values? Family values are important on countless levels owing to the fact that it establishes a foundation, which supports a family. In “Restoring Basic Values” Dan Quayle contends that numerous social dilemmas people experience in America are “directly related to the breakdown of family structure” (182). Quayle puts across that the lack of family values in the society is the motivation for the killings and riots in L.A. in 1992. Quayle believes that the rioters and the killers are not to blame for this crazy mayhem but as crazy as it sounds, blames the people who never taught these rioters as children what was right from wrong. The point Quayle is trying to transmit is that the more people separate ourselves from family values, the higher chance of worse things happening are due to occur. Considering that guidance and influencing children while they are young brings about people making right decisions in life while they are older.
The values that I learned from my parents as an infant, child, adolescent, and, most recently, as an adult, are continually enforced and taught to me today. It is because of this strong family support that I have stayed the same as I was before entering college. My family has always preached strong family values that will be with me for the rest of my life, and will be passed on to my children and grandchildren. When it comes to family roles, some people have only a few and some may have a slew. I, for instance, only have two roles. These roles came to me when I was about fifteen years old, when I was just starting high school. I would consider me as the youth leader and motivator in my family. These roles allow me to interact with my family to a great extent and more importantly pay attention to my elder relatives when they have something to say. These links allow a family to influence, shape, impact, and change one’s life. The intimacy within the family sphere, shape all who are inside it, this cannot be changed, and well anything that comes from within the family cannot be changed. The family itself can control and change our views on society, influence how we view the family unit, and yet most of all impact our everyday choices. The family’s capacity of guidance can make such an abundant shift that can only be felt, and barely visible unless seen through strained eyes, that makes this connection even more inexplicable than love.

A family must establish a set of values and morals that the members should try to live and abide by. It does not mean writing them down on paper and following them as if they are laws, but it simply means taking a practical approach to raising a family. The best way to ensure that these morals are followed by the children is by having the parents follow them as well. Children learn by modeling the authorities and in every family, the authorities are the parents. The parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s behavior because the children act accordingly to what they are taught and what they witness. If the parents set a bad example for behavior, chances are that the children justify any wrong behavior by arguing that that is how their parents act.
