Community Service “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.’’ Community service allows us to spread positivity and donate our time to the less fortunate. It encourages us to build connections with new people, and enables us to better, not only the world, but also ourselves. Oxford Dictionary defines it as, “Voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area,” and I unequivocally concur with that definition. STRIVE encouraged me to partake in a minimum of eight hours of community service, working at an organisation, assisting the less fortunate; anything suiting these requirements. It was undoubtedly the most enriching component of the program, but it also confronted me with some complications. Moreover, finding a place to begin became exceedingly onerous, due to my young age and inexperience. My options were limited, so I couldn't be over-particular or fussy in my choice. However, this was indubitably not about myself, but more so about the less fortunate that required my help. With this thought process and mindset of high precedence, I was able to find work at the Salvation Army, and complete a total of 10 hours. Each week, a certain colour of tags were half price. Then, on Saturdays, my work day, I would place all half price items to the left side of the rack. If any customers walked into the store when I was working the floor, my job was to greet them and notify them about the half price items. Prior to experiencing this, in all honesty, I had no social skills. And although they could still be better now, I definitely saw an immense improvement. I’m actually quite an awkward, timid person around strangers, which can be difficult sometimes, but I managed to achieve big steps towards confidence while working the Salvation Army.
