Importance Of Accountability

If there were ever a single word to describe what is needed to be a quality leader, it would be accountability. The word accountability can be used to represent much more than its usual context of physical location. Accountability within a leader can be broken down by responsibility, selflessness, composure, and competence. These grouped together can produce a high quality noncommissioned officer.
When an issue arises, whether big or small, it is natural for people to look for someone to blame, even when the fault is their own. From his article about the importance of responsibility Michael Hyatt states that, “Until you take responsibility, you are a victim. One of these values is “selfless service”. What does it mean to be selfless? The definition of selfless, as defined by the Oxford dictionary is “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own”. (Oxford Dictionary, 2018) This is also referred to within the NCO creed as follows: “I will always place their needs above my own”. As a leader, it is your job to place the needs of others above your own. This is both in regards to the assigned mission and the welfare of other soldiers. When a leadership role is represented as a weak link or incompetent, it may be difficult to obtain success. A writer for leadershipnow, Michael McKinny states “Being competent doesn’t mean that a leader knows how to do everything, but rather that they know what to do and how to get it done.”(McKinny, 2007). A leader who tries to accomplish the task on their own is only setting themselves up for failure. While it is still important to show others what you are capable of in order to gain trust. A competent leader will take accountability for what their strengths and weaknesses are; as well as where they can find the resources
