In the text of Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, so many controversial things happen that make you think about what really is happening and why everything is happening. When Christians introduce themselves to the Igbo people, as well as their religion, it seems as if the Igbo society begins to fall apart. The social scale that they had developed before seemed to no longer matter as much, and violence was looked at differently than how the Igbo culture saw it. So many things changed simply because of the introduction of the Christian people into the Igbo peoples’ lives.

There seems to no longer be an Igbo law. Instead it is replaced by the law of the Christians, with their courthouse and their jail. The Christians even went as far as bringing kotma, African men from far away who use violence to uphold the law over the Igbo people. A school is also built by Mr. Brown, so as to bring about written words and language to the Igbo people, both adults and children together. Before Mr. Brown has to leave he informs Okonkwo of how well his son Nwoye is doing at the college he is attending, but Okonkwo shows no interest for his son at all, disgusted by how he has turned his back on his birth culture. People are beginning to turn on each other. When the festival of the Earth goddess arrives the Christians get too cocky towards the Igbo people whom are dressed up to represent the egwugwu. The people of the church state that the egwugwu would be too afraid to touch a Christian. One of the dressed up Igbo men prove the Christian wrong and strike him. However the man then takes off the Igbo man’s mask which is a sin in Igbo culture. This causes a large problem and later that night the rest of the egwugwu burn down the Christian church. The leaders of the Igbo clan are taken into custody by the Christians by hand of the kotma, and the rest of the clan is desperate to free them so they agree to pay the fine put upon them for their actions in return for the
