Recommended: Gender and its roles in literature

For perspective in the Novel “Things Fall Apart” , Achebe’s Igbo land is a male ruling environment. A good example would be Okonkwo he is respected because he is nothing like his father he is strong and unoka is weak, fearless where Udoka is scared. Because he is strong and fearless he is the most respected man in Umuofia.
Okonkwo's refuses to show anything but anger and ends up killing Ikemefuna which he loved dearly all because of the dominant environment. Okonkwo becomes an alpha-male in Umuofia. Although he is already rich and strong he is scared that he will be seen as weak and poor like his father.
In Umuofia things are different the Igbos believe that the spirits favor the strong and that life shines on the warrior and the fearless only.

    Fear of failure and weakness dominates Okonkwo throughout his life. At first this fear motivates him to rise to success by working diligently and doing everything his father did not do.
