26 – Apparition Idmaer heard the cell door open and prepared himself for further torture. Saega had inflicted all manner of pain; cutting, slicing, tearing, stretching, crushing. The magical numbing Saega had applied had worn off quickly. Since then, Saega relished every cry the fox-head staff elicited from Idmaer. Even though Saega had gained control of the spire, he still had not obtained the grimoire’s missing pages. It was a miracle that Idmaer could even think for the pain. More than the pain was the loneliness without the spire’s presence. The bond had been severed too swiftly. “You will need to atone still.” His mind cleared for a moment, and yet the phantasm remained. The truth of this vision struck him. It was no vision at all. Edoma. She had returned. With resolute purpose, Idmaer crept over to the insert between two bricks where he had hidden the papers. While he had the chance, he wanted to make things right. To return what he still possessed that was not his own. He reached for the pages, but paused. Providing her with them would endanger her life. Saega might do what he had done to her in order to find them. He couldn’t risk that, but he still refused to lie to her again. He turned around, and saw that she had left the cell. The thought crossed his mind that she had indeed been a phantasm, but she returned a few moments later. “I’ve ensured we will have no unexpected visitors for the next hour.” She then told him to lay down on the floor and he obeyed. Coldness touched his flesh and her felt her fingers on him. She was warding him again, but this time the wards felt different. His muscles throbbed with energy until they threatened to burst. He cried out, but she continued, heedless to his body’s involuntary
