Ideological Differences in the Britich Colonies

There were many British colonies in the New World, many founded by people with different goals and beliefs. Due to the differences in ideologies the colonies held, such as the Chesapeake Bay and New England colonies, the political, economical and cultural development differed between them. Despite having very different ways of organizing life, diverse colonies, ultimately were able to resist British policies after the French Indian War by coordinating forces.
The cultural development of the Chesapeake Bay colonies and New England colonies differed greatly because the people who were attracted to each were very different. The New England colonies were founded by the Puritans who sailed across the Atlantic for religious freedoms during the Great Migration away from the threatening climate in England. The people who came to America were largely families hoping to start a new life. Because the puritan religion unified them and their goal to set up Go’s Kingdom in America, the founding families were able to organize centralized town life. The colonies grew fast because of the even sex ratio but the family structure of the colonies largely remained the same where men were the head of house and women must obey men’s decision, although women did enjoy certain rights like divorce. The Chesapeake Bay colonies to the south on were much different in purpose therefore fundamentally different in cultural development. These colonies were originally founded for economic purposes and instead of families, most of the original inhabitants of these colonies were men looking to make money. Benjamin Franklin repurposed his “Join or Die” political cartoon and Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” helped to rally the colonies into cooperating resistance. The colonies sent representatives to meetings such as the Virginia House of Burges and the First Continental Congress, which eventually issued the Declaration of Resolves, a petition against the Intolerable Acts that was sent to the King.
The Early British colonies in America were founded and developed by people with different ideas and beliefs. Through their development they enjoyed freedoms and opportunities that would not of been available in England. When colonies felt these freedoms were infringed upon they resisted against British rule, ultimately realized the best way to resist was to do so cooperatively.
