Whenever I have had need to visit a hospital, be it for an x-ray, operation or physiotherapy, I have found my time there to be a positive experience. It is these experiences and my interest in science that led me to set my heart on the career of an ODP. Unfortunately, hospital visits can be stressful for people and I know it would be amazing if I could enable other people to have the same optimistic view of the NHS as I do. There are various factors that make me feel that I would be well suited to the career of an ODP, my desire to help people is one of them. I currently volunteer at a breast cancer charity, The Pink Place, where I help clients settle in and offer tea and coffee. The women visiting are going through a difficult time and I feel that the time they spend at The Pink Place is invaluable. It is part of my role to make them feel comfortable, welcome and relaxed in a time that is very distressing. Listening to a person's concerns and being able to reassure them is very important and it is skills like this that I believe will aid me in becoming a proficient ODP. Although she highlighted that the jobs can at times be stressful I feel that I would adapt well to the challenges and the variety of work would be fascinating. Being given the opportunity to 'care for' a simulated patient reaffirmed my choice as I found it a very interesting and gratifying experience. It also allowed me to learn a bit of the history of the profession (e.g. the reason for names behind instruments such as Gillie's forceps). In preparation for life as an ODP I am starting work as a home carer in a few weeks and in January I will be starting bank housekeeping in a private health clinic which I am really looking forward to as I will be able to see theatres and surgical equipment properly for the first
