Only seconds away from completing my first hurdle race, I suddenly found myself facing the ground. I knew I had two options; give up or persevere. Since coming to the University of Manitoba I have continued to persevere and learn from my experiences while strengthening my relationship with this institution, participating in Canada Summer Games, understanding the values of representation and discovering my aspiration of being a physician assistant.
My relationship to the University of Manitoba started at 8 years old, when I learned to play violin in the Suzuki music program. My connection with this institution has been further strengthened as I pursue my undergraduate degree as a Bison Athlete, while also working in the physical activity and chronic disease prevention lab in the Applied Research Centre. Thus, this institution has been a monumental part of my life and has provided me with countless opportunities that have shaped me into the person I am today. Representing Manitoba was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life as well as my proudest achievement to date, as my team won a silver medal in the 4x400 relay. In addition to our medal, my team broke the provincial record for the 4x400 relay. The previous record set on August 14th, 1979 was 3:47.00, and on August 4th, 2017 we ran 3:43.65. There are no words to explain how I felt when my teammates and I were told we broke a 38-year-old record. What I realized in that moment was that all the hard workouts, sacrifices, and teamwork that went into breaking that record were worth it. Notably, the success of Team Manitoba’s female 4x400 team was not solely due to me as an individual, it was due to each team member’s talent, hard work and commitment to working together.
