Dr. Seuss, a well-known writer, said in ‘I Can Read with My Eyes Shut’, “The more that you read, the more that you will know. The more that you learn, the more places that you will go.” My greatest passions are art and math, but reading is like another world full of wonder, surprises, and mysteries. I will not say that some of the best things I have ever done are thanks to reading because that would be a lie, but I can say that some of the best things I have learned have occurred because of what a book can hold within its pages. Kids today only want to play on their phones, tablets, or laptops, but when I was in elementary school, for me it was more like being sent off to school every morning, get the education that the teacher had planned for us, come home to do my homework, play a bit outside, and then end my day with an enjoyable book that I would read or my mother would read to me. I would sit next to my stepdad, who hopefully can rest in peace, and just listen to him read to me about mechanics, which could explain my love for cars and the respect I had for my step father who would take time off his busy life just to spend time reading and teaching me new things. Every year there would be a book fair, it was basically the best time of the year for me because I could walk around and see the different kinds of books, but the best time was when I bought a few books to take home with me. Of course, just like any other kid that was around my age, I would always stop to look for the books about princesses, dragons, friendly vampires, or anything that had super or magical powers. I personally believe that literacy at a young age is just wonderful, especially without anyone telling me to read something more advanced or more realistic because I could read anything I wanted and make it my own world …show more content…

Freshman year, I read ‘To kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee in class, but for me it felt much easier of an assignment because I had already read that book in middle school on my own time since I got it as gift for Christmas, but I could see that for my fellow peers it wasn’t as easy. In class, we would read stories or excerpts from with literacy book, we would have to answer questions on every piece that we had to read. As time passes by I have noticed that I haven’t been reading as much as I should be or at least as much as I use to, and I’m afraid to say that it kind of disappoints me that I can say much about what I have read since I have started high school. Reading was something that I enjoyed to do every day, but now that I’m looking at myself clearly, my opinion has changed a lot, I’m not saying that I dislike reading simply that I have learned to enjoy other subjects more. I was taught lesson after lesson by just reading books but it’s time to do other things and learn from
