Food deserts are places where healthy foods are not produced nor sold. Unfortunately, Chicago is filled with food deserts. Approximately 600,000 people reside in areas that consist of food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Nearly 200,000 of those people are children. These children do not have the opportunity for healthier options, which shows an increase in obesity rates (News One Staff, 2011). There are 77 Chicago communities and out of that 77, 23 are food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Chicagoans-particularly the black communities- are forced to live off the accessible food that is near them. The food deserts are in Austin, North Lawndale, Armour Square, Near South Side, Fuller Park, Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Woodlawn, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Ashburn, Auburn Gresham, Beverly, Washington Heights, Morgan Park, Roseland, Pullman, South Deering, Riverdale, South Chicago, and West Pullman (Grossinger, 2007). The communities are usually served by junk food- filled corner stores, which do not offer an abundance of healthy foods. The communities are in desperate need of change.

The pathology model, known as the culture of poverty, claims that poverty is attributed to the personal failings of the individual, family or community. It is perceived that this failings stem from a combination of dysfunctional behaviors, attitudes, and values that make and keep poor people poor. With the structural economic model, it is believed that proponents of poverty as a structural problem trace its roots to dysfunctional aspects of the economic system. These claims place more responsibility on the failure of the government to address fundamental economic patterns that have forced people into poverty and not provided a means out. They also reflect the idea that what are often considered to be characteristics of a culture of poverty are actually characteristics of poverty itself, having nothing to so with the attitudes, values, and life choices od those forced to live in poverty. Why are there families with children that go all weekend without a meal while our grocery stores are overflowing with food, and our pantries at home have more than we need? If more people were educated about the reality of hunger in East Tennessee, then more people would be inclined to help resolve the problem. Through education this issue can be eradicated. There are ways to better inform East Tennesseans about the realities that plague our poverty stricken population that are ultimately avoidable. Volunteering and making donations to the food pantries and organizations in the area are two of the best ways to support the less fortunate who need aid. In East Tennessee, hunger is a much larger problem than most people know and could be reduced if more people were educated about it, new ways were found to promote feeding the hungry, people volunteered and donated.
Former senior associate editor of The Atlantic, Matthew O’Brien, in his article, Poverty is Literally Making People Sick Because They Can’t Afford Food, claims that people of low income are more likely to become hospitalized for hypoglycemia at the end of the month. O’Brien’s purpose is to convey the idea that people of the lower class are struggling to pay for their own food at the end of the month and that could lead to severe health issues. He employs techniques within his article such as having a stern tone, using passionate word choice, and a concrete research study in order to evoke emotions of sorrow from his general audience especially those in the upper and middle class.
It’s discouraging to witness a fellow human being sitting on the corner with a sign claiming to be homeless, starving, and desperate. When you witness a generous citizen hand the needy a couple dollars, hoping they fulfilled their wish of eating for the day, you experience a feeling of caring and joy. However, I have witnessed this several times, that same desperate woman on the corner in raggedy clothing and clumped hair. I felt contemplative about doing a so-called good deed until I witnessed her one night board a fairly new Jeep Liberty in a nearby parking lot. This baffled me and made me wonder who are desperate from the dishonest. Panhandling is a growing problem and what seems to me has become a trend in the United States today. It is hard to get away from panhandling and the negative effects it brings on society, including the panhandlers themselves. Thus, if I could ban anything in the world, I would ban panhandling.
The ghettos played an essential role in the Holocaust. One of the purposes of the ghettos was to isolate the Jews from the rest of society in selected areas. The ghettos created by the Nazis were one of the first steps to annihilate the Jews. As the hostilities against the Jews grew, the ghettos became a transition area, meaning that after a length of time they were sent to concentration camps or death camps. The conditions were harsh and every day was a challenge to survive. The Jews were forced to live there and go through hunger, sickness and torment. In the ghettos tens of thousands of deaths took place, but a small percent survived.
The Dallas metroplex is an incredible community that has seen incredible levels of growth within the last few years. People from all over the nation have made Dallas there home and rightly so, as Dallas features a diversity of cultures and opportunities not typically found around the state. With the growth of the population comes the responsibility to help those in need in our community. In the Dallas Metroplex it is estimated that at least 452,000 people are food insecure. In fact, there are several notable cities in the Dallas County that hold families in need of food assistance.
Nearly 50,000 people, including 30,000 children, die each day due to poverty-related problems and preventable disease in underdeveloped Countries. That doesn’t include the other millions of people who are infected with AIDS and other incurable diseases. Especially those living in Sub-Saharan Africa (70%), or “the Third-World,” and while we fight to finish our homework, children in Africa fight to survive without food, or clean water. During the next few paragraphs I will give proof that poverty and disease are the two greatest challenges facing under developed countries.
