My most honourable Uncle, I am writing to inform you of a multitude of misconducts by the Duke of Ferrara, and to persuade you to abolish the marriage plans between him and your daughter immediately. The Duke is an abominable man who is unfit to marry your amiable, well-mannered daughter, Carol. With disheartening, horrific evidence at hand, I sincerely hope to change your mind about the entirety of this marriage. I attended his most recent speech at his palace and learned much about him that I feel would be of concern to you.
The Duke of Ferrara is a distasteful, abhorrent man who wishes to control everything around him. This is incredibly unhealthy for Carol, her being a self-driven woman. While he was still married to the last Duchess, Melanie, he “gave commands” (Line 45) to her on a regular basis. He treated her as someone less than him, rather than respecting her as a fine lady, referring to her as his “object” (Line 53). Evidence I discovered reveals that the last Duchess’ death is the responsibility of the Duke, and the Duke alone. The Duke himself said that he “gave commands;/then all smiles stopped together” (Line 45-46). This in itself implies the last Duchess’s death. Also, he mentions the Duchess “looking as if she were alive” (Line 2) on numerous occasions. Chances are he wouldn’t mention that if she actually were alive. In addition to this, it is quite clear to see that he isn’t interested in having a wife for the sake of love at all; instead, his interests lie where the dowry sits. According to him, “no just pretence/Of mine for dowry will be disallowed” (Line 50-51). Another trend in the twelfth century was the arrangement of marriages to increase power, gain alliances, or to mend bad blood between people. This can be seen when the girl, after being in the tower for so long, says “A curse on my family, and on all the others, who gave me to this jealous man, who married me to his body” (72). It was not the girl’s choice to be married to this man because of love but due to her beauty, wisdom, and good family she was married to this rich man.
