Have you ever wandered what it would be like if animals had human intellegence? Animals communicate with each other in ways that are meaningful to them, but imagine your dog tells you that he wants a treat or go out for a walk. What if one day animals are able to speak the words humans can actually understand? In the novel Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis, after the gods Hermes and Apollo grant human consciousness and language to a group of dogs in the veterinary clinic in Toronto, Majnoun, a black poodle, eventually reveals his ability to speak English to his human master, a woman named Nira. Through reading this book, I learned that being in love doesn’t always mean you have to be lovers, sometimes you can just be friends.

Majnoun is the most fully developed character in Fifteen Dogs, after being wounded by other dogs’ attack, he happens to get rescued and finds himself in a long-term cohabitation with Nira and Miguel, a loving couple in the Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale. After Majnoun attempts to speak to his mistress in her own language, temporary causing the terrified Nira to wonder if the dog is possessed or she’s losing her mind, they begin to forge a deep and lasting friendship. Although at first, she was still frightened of Majnoun, but she would speak to him about travelling, about work, about the minor annoyances of living with her husband, about life and death, and about love.
