Human Cloning Essay

904 Words2 Pages

Human cloning is a new biological technology developed at an astonishing rate in past thirty years. The debates about human cloning draw much attention, as its development will affect the entire future of human beings. Cloning technology is just on the starting stage and still has done experiments on animals. Also, this technology has been pushed forward or held back by economic, political, military and moral factors. Human cloning in this essay only represents therapeutic cloning and children reproductive cloning. To be specific, this essay will discuss two benefits of human cloning about therapeutic cloning in disease cure and reproductive cloning in creating new children and two challenges about health risk and social value risk.

One of the benefits of human cloning is diseases cure. People can survive from life-threatening illness by therapeutic cloning, such as stem cells cloning and gene cloning. It has been achieved that patient-specific embryonic stem cells (ESCs) which have the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division can be created by cloning (Cyranoski, 2013; Damle, 2012). According to Damle (2012), stem cells can be grown and transformed into specialized cells which constitute various tissues, such as muscles, nerves and hearts. So people who have heart diseases, worsen kidneys or other organ illness, can transplant tissues without incompatibility and donations waiting. Additionally, anticancer strategy can be improved by gene cloning. For example, in mouse models of protate cancer, cloning a cDNA library derived from mormal prostate into the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) results in increase cure rate up to 80% (Flemming, 2011). Then Flemming (2011) underlined that cDNA libraries cloned into VSV c...

In conclusion, human cloning can not only have benefits on individuals but also bring risks on people and society. Therapeutic cloning and reproductive cloning play a pivotal role in improving people’s life and giving new born child while there are hidden dangers of therapeutic and reproductive cloning, threatening individuals’ health and social values. In therapeutic terms, cloning use in curing disease should be continually developed and made use of, though success rate and lifespan issue are barriers currently. However, countries’ laws should prohibit reproductive cloning like children cloning, because children cloning cause less respectability on humans’ life. Thus, it is wisely to regulate cloning technology precisely, and to ecourage therapeutic cloning while to ban reproductive cloning at the same time.
