While racism and abuse are subjects that need to be addressed, many people feel uncomfortable with this book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and its stark view on them. It is not exactly a topic to ignore, but since the glaring racism and mentions of abuse are too much for some, we must consider taking it off the required books list. While the writer, Mark Twain, was a heavy supporter of African-American rights, his realism is too close to home for some. For one, Huck Finn contains 219 instances of the n-word, a derogatory term both back then and now. This distracts readers, as it is such a taboo to say in today’s culture to say.
