1. The feud is going on between two families, the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons. Huck had been taken in by the Grangerfords but they became suspicious that he was a Shepherdson. The Grangerfords that Huck lives with is Tom, Bob, Charlotte, Sophia, and Buck. Buck fills Huck in on the 30 year family feud, he also tells him about how in the last year two people have died because of the feud. During a gun fight in the forest, Buck and his 19 year old cousin, Joe died. The Shepherdsons go to the same church as the Grangerfords, who have a big estate with over 100 slaves. 2. Emmeline is the dead daughter of the Grangerford family. She always created paintings and poetry and Huck feels bad that no one makes any for her. Dr. Robinson is the only man who realizes that the Duke and Dauphin are fake. He calls them out for being frauds. He states that their accents are fake and that they are pretending to be British. He tries to warn the town but no one will listen to him. 14. Mary Jane is the oldest, and one of the nicest Wilks daughter. She immediately trusts the King and Duke, even though they are big liars. She gives them a big amount of money that her father left behind with no hesitation. She doesn't believe that they are frauds until Huck tells her. 15. The tattoo is what helps the lawyer solve the case for the King and Duke's fraud. He asks what was tattooed on Peter Wilks breast and the King was so surprised by it. He tries saying the tattoo is a small blue arrow, but really it is small faded letters of P, B. The crowds realize that they are frauds and want to drown them. 16. Mumps is a disease that Huck makes up while talking to Susan. He tells her all about how Mary Jane told him about this horrible disease. He only tells this lie to make sure Susan won't say anything about her sister's
The book starts off telling us that you may know Huck from another book called the adventures of Tom Sawyer. Which was also written by Mark Twain. In the first chapter, we figured out the Tom and Huck found a stash of gold that some robbers stole and hid in a cave. They both got $6,000 a piece. After they both got their shares of the money they had Judge Thatcher put it into a trust, in the bank. Once Huck was known for finding the treasure Widow Douglass adopted Huck. Widow Douglass also tried to civilize Huck, but Huck didn't want to be with Douglass so he ran away. Huck took all of his belongings with him, but nothing that Douglass gave him. After Huck ran away he went to join up with Tom Sawyer and his new gang of robbers. The Widow tried to teach Huck about reading and writing before he ran away. But thats the reason why he left because he wasn't interested in any of that stuff. Huck left the Widow’s house when he heard something outside the house, it was Tom waiting for him in the yard. So Huck got up and left.
	When Huck encounters the Grangerfords and Shepardsons he describes Colonel Grangerford as, " …a gentleman, you see. He was a gentleman all over; and so was his family"(Twain 86). On Sunday when Huck goes to church he sees the hypocriticalism of the families, "The men took their guns along, …The Shepardsons done the same. I t was pretty ornery preaching-all about brotherly love, and such-like…" (Twain 90).
In this instance, Huck questions the logic behind such foolishness. He is young, but he understands that this feud has no point. He represents Twain’s own questioning of man’s preoccupation with brutality, and his illusion of false honor and chivalry. Taken at face value, the few Shepherdson-Grangerford scenes seem nothing more than a meaningless cameo on Twain’s part, however with closer inspection, we see the true motive behind the pointless stupidity.... ... middle of paper ...
Huck is without a family: neither the drunken attention of Pap nor the pious ministrations of Widow Douglas were desirable allegiance. He stumbles upon the Grangerfords in darkness, lost from Jim and the raft. The family, after some initial cross-examination, welcomes, feeds and rooms Huck with an amiable boy his age. With the light of the next morning, Huck estimates "it was a mighty nice family, and a mighty nice house, too"(110). This is the first of many compliments Huck bestows on the Grangerfords and their possessions.
Huck witnesses the depravity of human nature when experiences the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons. After Huck and Jim get split up on the Mississippi River, Huck spends some time living on the Grangerford’s estate. He befriends a Grangerford named Buck, and the two of them spend a lot of time together. Buck explains that the Grangerfords and Shepherdsons have been feuding for years, although no one quite remember why. Huck does not understand the point of a feud. Buck goes on and explains, “A feud is this way: A man has a quarrel with another man, and kills him; then that other man's brother kills him; then the other brothers, on both sides, goes for one another; then the cousins chip in -- and by and by everybody's killed off, and there ain't no more feud. But it's kind of slow, and takes a long time” (Twain 107). Huck cannot comprehend the point of a feud, especially since in this case Buck cannot pinpoint the cause of the feud. While Huck is traveling down the river with Jim, he must lie and often disguise himself to survive on his own to conceal his identity. Huck rebels because he does not want to follow his aunts house rules or live up to her expectations which are to conform to social norms. This means he has to dress cleanly and neatly, use manners, go to school, and be polite to everyone. Huck also is confused because he wants to get away from his abusive father who excessively drinks. Huck is afraid of his father who has beaten him and verbally abused him repeatedly therefore, his only solution is to run away. He does this by faking his own death. Curiousity overwhelms him and he wants to know how society has taken to the news of his death. In order to get some information Huck disguises himself as a girl. He meets with Judy Lawson, a local woman, and asks about the disappearance of Huck Finn. Although his disguise works well, Judy Loftus starts to test him to disguise whether Huck is really a girl. As soon as Judy says, "What's your real name? Is it Bill, or Tom, or Bob? -or what is it?"(Twain 70) Huck realizes he has no chance in pulling such pranks. When confronted with his lie Huck tells the truth and ends up making a friend who says he can count on her. Huck also tries to protect Jim from being captured by lying about himself and his situation.
Huck then decides to fake his death which is a form of lying. In an ideal society, an abused child would go to a higher authority and turn in the cold-hearted parent. Sadly, Huck's society is not like this and consequently feels as if everyone abandoned him. Because of this, he had to take his life into his own hands and fend for himself. Huck has to lie to get out of this threatening and unsafe situation. Huck decided the best solution would be to fake his own death. This ends up being to Huck's advantage when he leaves with Jim. Another example when Huck lies to protect himself was when he first came out of hiding dresses as a girl. The reason for Huck coming out of hiding was because he was bored and wanted to hear the town gossip. The logic behind Huck dressing up as a girl is so no one recognizes him. He goes to this house and sees an old woman and thinks that she looks like a lady who tells gossip. When asked his name, he lied and responded that his name was Sarah Williams. The old woman whose name was Judith started to figure out as they were talking that "Sarah Williams" is not who she really says she
Although they are family, Huck is subject to physical and mental abuse and never gets any love from Pap. “But by-and-by Pap got too handy with his hick’ry, and I couldn’t stand it. I was all over with welts. He got to go away, too, and lock me in. Once he locked me in and was gone three days” (Pg 32).This illustration of the drastic difference between a typical family and Twain’s portrayal of family shows the kind of family that is typical to Huck during that time.
The three sisters, Mary Jane, Susan, and Joanna, are depicted as well-mannered girls who were raised correctly and were very hospitable, albeit the initial questioning of Joanna due to Huck’s inconsistencies with his story. The setting of this passage is based on the estate of the late Peter Wilks. The mood of this passage is solemn, yet lighthearted. Toward the beginning of the novel, Huck has no problem robbing caravans, kidnapping wealthy people for money, and even killing the families of the gang formed by him and his friends if they became turncoats and told of this gang.
Jim and Huck’s friendship evolves throughout the novel and Huck changes the way he treats Jim. Huck started off this novel by playing practical jokes on Jim with Tom Sawyer. Huck was taught that there is nothing wrong with mistreating blacks. After journeying down the Mississippi river with Jim Huck knows he can’t always listen to society.
After a ferryboat accident, Huck seems to lose his slave companion Jim after coming ashore. Huck then is introduced to Buck Grangerford (about the same age as Huck) and is allowed to stay in the Grangerford household. The Grangerford family consists of Buck, who is a young adventurous boy, Emmiline, a fourteen-year-old who was dead girl, Bob, Tom, Miss Charlotte, and Miss Sophia. The Grangerfords showed all the signs of being upper class by having an extremely nice house, acting properly, and each member of the family had their own servant. Eventually it becomes apparent to Huck that the Grangerfords are feuding with a neighboring household, the Sheperdsons; this seems to be the central angle Twain uses to satire.
Widow Douglas adopted him so that she could civilize him and raise him to be a gentleman. Huck did not like going to school, attending church or dressing up. Tom Sawyer, Ben Rogers, and Joe Harper were his friends at the local school. Huck and Tom found a treasure hidden by bank robbers and were allowed to keep six thousand dollars each, for themselves, as a reward. Huck’s father heard about his son’s treasure and returned to St. Petersburg.
Subsequently, Huck continues his journey down the river to another town where he suddenly finds himself staying with the Grangerfords. Huck soon befriends a boy named Buck who tells him all about the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons. Both have been fighting for over 30 years but neither of them know exactly why they are battling each other. Buck explains, ??but they don?t know now what the row was about in the first place?(180). The tribal ware fare of the families is suppressed with religion.
Pap says this during their first meeting in the book. He cannot believe that Huck is becoming an educated person and having a normal life. Pap is already angry because of Huck's money, and now he is just irate.
