Recommended: Tragedy in the hamlet

If The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark was to be place in a different time and place it would change major key parts about the play. If Hamlet was placed in the 1920’s New York city, the whole play would be about a mafia family than a royal blood family. With this change so would many Characters personalities and aspects. Not only that but since Hamlet was written in a time where it was king and queens, this change of time will change how people interact and talked to each other. The new mafia family would still consistent the main characters but the way they dressed and acted would be different since in the 1920’s most people are serious and very dark. The Mousetrap would take place in a grand theater in broadway and the characters in there would still have the same looks and costumes but Hamlet would be rudely interrupting the audience so he can keep teling the new king pen that he has killed his father. The fight scenes would be more interest since there would be guns instead of swords. The most it would be gang wars since the other guy that was mentioned in the play was from a different country. Because of this instead of a king that has an enemy country it would be a rival gang that would want to take over the Hamlets business, because of this the rival gang sent letters to the Hamlets and gave them a warning that the Kingpin is wanting to take over their stuff. The graveyard scene in the original play will be very different because in the original play it had it in the forest and at night, but the in the new play the scene would not be in the forest and at night, it would be in daylight and also by the city. The last scene in the play would also be very different, there would be no fencing instead there would be a scene where they are outside doing a gun dual and instead of a poison sword it would be poison bullets. The kingpin on the other hand would be drinking whisky instead of wine and the psion would be in the drink instead of the balls he used in the original play. (Hazlitt 164-169) Though it is clearly a testament to the realism of Shakespeare's tragedy, there is something strange and confusing in Hazlitt's analysis. To put it plainly, Hamlet is most definitely not a realistic play. Not only are the events conveyed in the drama fantastic, the dialogue that brings it to the reader is overdramatic and often metatheatrical. The stirring monologues delivered throughout the play are theatrical speeches rather than genuine dialogue. Frequent references to acting and theater, especially surrounding the presence of the players, serve to make the audience aware of the play instead of drawing them into it. The tragedy's villain oozes evil, murdering the king and marrying his queen in just two months. Even more unrealistic is the presence of the king's ghost, surely there weren't really any apparitions floating around the court at Denmark. Then why does Hazlitt make this statement? Though it is tempting to simply write him off as a bad critic, similar statements made by other critics of the 19th century suggest that this view of Hamlet as a realist drama was commonly held in the Victorian Era. It seems clear that the ideals of the Victorian era caused a significant change in the way Hamlet was interpreted. Victorian society's high esteem for rationality and utility shifted the focus of Hamlet from the tragedy's fantastic nature to its realistic insights.
