“Poverty is the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possession” (“Poverty”). Throughout history, poverty has been a debilitating social issue that has negatively impacted people and societies. Numerous programs and initiatives dating back centuries have attempted to solve poverty yet it still remains an issue. There are many strategies that help combat or minimize poverty. We will look at how government legislation and social aid programs have impacted poverty and also the factors that ultimately place people in poverty.

Although the American high school dropout rate has fallen from twelve percent to seven percent over the past few decades, it is still estimated that every 26 seconds an American teenager drops out of high school. Adding to the lack of education from which high school dropouts suffer, they also have a thirty percent chance of living in poverty once dropping out of high school. Unfortunately, the negative impact of the choice to dropout doesn’t stop there. The children of these dropouts are then seven times more likely to drop out of high school when they are of age. This is know as the “poverty trap” because once are you and your family are into the poverty system, it is statistically challenging to get out. It is quite like being snared in a trap. People are often expected to spend money on material items that they do not necessarily. This is a big issue because this drives people into debt which is the beginning of a continuing cycle of poverty. It’s natural to accumulate debt within people’s lifetimes--mortgages, car loans, education loans, etc. The difference is to know just how deep into debt one can go and still successfully get out to avoid years in the cycle of poverty. Being born frequently spreads like a disease from person to person, family to family. The poverty trap is a significant way to be in poverty and stay in poverty. The poverty trap happens when a baby is born into a poor or impoverished family and remains poor for his or her lifetime, eventually repeating the process by birthing children into poverty.
