Do you care for animals whenever possible? Do you like to be with all kinds of animals? A small animal veterinary job is perfect for you if you answered yes to these two questions. Veterinarians can care for many small animals, no matter what their problem. What does a small animal veterinarian do? A veterinarian can do many things. A small animal veterinarian prevents, diagnoses, and treats illnesses in small animals. Usually they treat birds, cats, dogs, fish, reptiles and other domesticated animals such as farm animals (“Small Animal Veterinarian: Salary, Duties and Requirements”). First you need to complete the prerequisites for veterinary school. A bachelor’s degree is recommended to get into a good veterinary school. You need to get 45-90 credits in an undergraduate program at a college before you can go to an accredited veterinary school. Second, you need to apply to vet medicine program at an accredited school. Usually entrance to a school requires an admission test. The test can be the graduate record examination (G.R.E) (“Small Animal Veterinarian: Career Summary, Employment Outlook, and Education Requirements”). There are thirty veterinary medicine schools accredited in the U.S. (“Veterinary Medicine”). To apply it is easier to apply through the medical college application service because you can apply to many schools with just one application. The admission to these schools is very competitive and a strong educational background and previous animal experience gives you an advantage. Third, you need to get your Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (D.V.M) (“Become a Small Animal Veterinarian in Five Steps”). The D.V.M usually takes four years. (“Small Animal Veterinarian: Career
To become a vet tech you have to go through the proper education and training required. An associate’s degree in veterinary technology is required to become a vet tech and takes about two years to accomplish (Exploring Medical Careers). An internship may also be a requirement of the tech course (Interview with a Veterinary Technician). Along with the degree, the Veterinary Technician National Exam must be passed to become certified. These tests cost $300.00 and are 170 questions long. The VTNE also offers two practice exams, each $45, to help one prepare for the actual exam (Vet Tech | VTNE | Veterinary Technician National Examination.). After becoming certified, a vet tech may have to undergo on the job training under supervision by a vet or an experienced vet tech (Collegegrad.com).
A vet tech can work in different work environments, such as animal hospitals, and private clinics. Working in various, environments create skillful tasks, which include: lab work, radiology, nursing care, surgery, x-rays, and assisting veterinarians in surgeries (Money Careers). Each of these tasks require their own abilities helping needy animals, for example: lab work deals with collecting samples of tissue, blood, and urine, nursing involves with taking care of the animals after the surgeries and checking on how their responding to the procedure (U.S. Bureau of Labor).
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.

When I was growing up and always playing with animals, I realized what I might want to do with my life. For animals in need to survive and carry on, there must be a caring person willing to take time out of their day to care for these animals. In one way or another, I have been taking care of animals my entire life. Growing up, I was completely dedicated to animals, caring for what could be considered a mini zoo.
