Racism was very relevant in the south evan after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 pushing boundaries had to be done. African Americans had to risk their lives and push boundaries a lot to fight for their rights in The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and in the article How the Freedom Riders Movement Began by Nadra Kareem Nittle. Secret life of bees takes place around the time of the civil rights act of 1964 in the south evan thought there was no segregation most white people still didn’t treat african americans fair. In the article say’s what is was like before the civil right act and what the Freedom Riders did and all the laws they broke to fight for their rights. In secret life of bees pushing boundaries is very present for example “Rosaleen lifted her snuff jug, which was filled with black spit, and calmly poured it across the tops of the men’s shoes,” (Sue monk Kidd Pg 32). The Freedom Riders Movement was before the civil rights act so african americans didn’t really have any civil rights any acts against segregation were a big deal and the people who did it got harsh punishment. This goes to show the great sacrifice these people went through to fight for their rights and all the laws they broke to get there. To many african americans going to jail was no big deal if it ment that it would get them closer to the goal and equal rights not only did they face jail time they had to worry about the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK went around killing african american and doing terrible thing to them but that didn’t faze
