How Smaller Class Sizes Can Improve Writing Instruction
On October 21st, 1998, President Bill Clinton formed an initiative to hire 100,000 teachers, and reduce class size in the earlier grades to an average of 18 students. This initiative sparked debate across the country. President Bill Clinton believed that having a large class size made it difficult for teachers to retain the attention of students, as well as focus on students that may need individual attention if they are struggling in the course. Several people who were against this initiative claim that reducing class size will not better the effects of teaching and will just be a wasted expense (“The Clinton Presidency”). With technology being integrated more and more in the classroom, many students may find it easier to take a composition studies course online. Online courses give students more choices and flexibility with their learning habits and development. Also, online academic courses and learning initiatives are becoming more aware of the needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and this means that people from such backgrounds are in a much better position to learn and progress than they used to be. Some people may challenge that students are not receiving the same education online versus in a traditional classroom setting because there may be too much freedom where integrity problems may arise (Gopala 76-79). The amount of money that is needed to do a complete reduction in class size is massive. Many local and federal governments do not have the funds available for the reduction of class size because they do not find it as a reoccurring problem. When looking to cut a class size, most of the money is spent on hiring new teachers as well as building onto the school and adding more classrooms (Herppich 944). The best way to overcome these obstacles is to find alternative ways to give a large classroom a small feel. In a large classroom setting, it may be hard to find time to ask your question or get clarification on your assignment, but if a professor extends their office hours or offers tutoring, students will be able to get the additional help they need. Some professors only offer an hour a week to come to their office to present questions which are unfair for students because that professor can have other students there for that or another course. Instructors in very large classes are more likely to emphasize learning factual information and less likely to stress using more communication skills (both oral and written) than are those in small and medium classes. This is especially true in general education courses (Gopala 74). Being available outside the classroom can be beneficial to many students who are uncomfortable or unable to ask a question during class
