Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I’ve tried to live so I cas look squarely back at him...if I connived at something like this, frankly I couldn’t meet his eye, and the day I can’t do that I’ll know I’ve lost him. At the beginning of the To Kill A Mockingbird atticus says he could not look at Jem and Scout if he acted one way at work and another at home. Atticus believes it makes him a better father is he is always the same. You are looked at better and you can make better decisions if you only live one way and not be two different people. In the middle of To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus says the case is doomed from the start but he still tries. “‘Link, that boy might go to the chair, but he’s not going till the truth’s told.’”(Lee 195). Atticus is saying that he will not let someone die for no reason. He is going to be the same person he always is even if it could ruin his reputation. At the end of the book Atticus is saying again that he couldn’t give Jem or Scout any help if he didn’t do the same. Atticus thinks that Jem killed Bob Ewell and if it gets covered up that contradicts everything he has ever said to do. Atticus is trying to teach to treat every encounter the same way. The first person Jem and Scout encounter that acts differently is Mr. Cunningham. Jem and Scout never thought much of him but when he was forced into a hard situation they learned he was different. When Mr. Cunningham was put in that situation he was willing to kill. Another person who was unknown was Bob Ewell. “‘Low-down skunk with enough liquor in him to make him brave enough to kill children....He had the guts to pester a poor colored woman, he had guts enough to pester Judge Taylor when he thought the house…’”(Lee 360-361). After Bob lost his integrity after the court case, he was enraged. Jem and Scout didn’t think Bob was a good person before but after they learned how much something like that can change a person. At the end of the book Atticus said most people are good when you know them. If you take the time to get to know a person they are most likely good.
