Film is an ever changing art that is constantly in motion both literally and physically. Film over the decades has changed dramatically due to the change in technology and in culture. Due to the intense and fast changing pace of film, film critiquing has become increasingly more deviated as time goes on. This is most obvious with older black and white films, because a majority of these films are far below the quality standard we have modern day. Then why do so many people still like older black and white movies? Many people still like black and white films because these type of films are what they were first exposed too. Just because a film is part of an older generation does not mean it is irrelevant today. There is not one concrete answer when it comes to grading a film because each film is different and tries to accomplish different things. An amazing example of this is a film we watch in class called the The Godfather directed by Francis Corp Polpa. The Godfather was made in 1972 dating the film 44 years old; however although the film is 4 decades old it still withstands the test of time and is even regarded as one of the best films of all time. Criticism of films over the years has changed dramatically because so have films. Now in the modern age there are so many films, that it has become easier to whittle out the films that are mediocre. Unlike in the 1950’s when the film industry was just starting to launch. Therefore the examples of Federico Fellini’s films and the The Godfather are fantastic examples that show many aspects of my philosophy about film.
