Imagine a student walking into class one day 20 minutes late with dark bags under their eyes, a dead phone in their hands, and a tired worn down look plastered across their face. Why? Many teens today will stay up late texting and conversing with their friends when they are suppose to be getting a good night's rest after a long day work. The consequences of texting at night include teens then not being able to function at school the next day. If phones and texting are distracting teens or taking away from their rest and free time then why not fix the problem. Some argue that it has a positive impact on teens because it helps introverted teens interact with others and it helps maintain relationships not break them apart. Alissa Fleck states in the article Texting & Its Positive Impact on Teens that, “Teens surveyed by the NYU Child Study Center noted they were able to use text messaging to talk to their friends about everything. Texting allows teenagers to say things they might be uncomfortable bringing up in person, helping introverts better reach out to others and express themselves.” The evidence from this survey demonstrates how introverted teens can feel uncomfortable bringing up certain topics with friends, so texting is a way that helps them reach out to others for help in some situations. This can calm an introverts nerves and make them less worried, anxious, scared, or even nervous. On top of that texting alongside in person socializing, relationships stay more grounded in reality and help teens who are in a distressed state or having negative mood swings (Texting & Its Positive Impact on Teens). When texting and face to face contact is implemented in a relationship it can strengthen the bond between the two people in the relationship. “Text messaging alone allows others to make rely information quickly and make basic plans.” says Alissa Fleck. As mentioned before imagine a student walking into class one day exhausted from being up all night on their phone instead of getting the greatly needed eight to ten hours of sleep. In the final analysis texting among teens can result in a there is no down time, takes away from time that should be spent studying, exercising, and relaxing. Also a lack in sleep can cause teens to be grumpy, angry, depressed, or cause them to have trouble in school. As the evidence shows many teens stay up late texting so they are exhaused in the morning, and teens have confessed to liking not having a phone because it gives them more free time to live a healthier life style.
