How Does Society Define A Hero?

Traditionally, society’s definition of a hero has to do with the immediate actions of a person. In these cases the individual found themselves in a situation that they had to make the decision to act in a selfless or selfish manner. If they chose to be selfless, they are considered a hero. This general definition could be broken down further when it is asked to each individual. Although the definition of a hero is usually straightforward, there are many different definitions of a hero within a society.
As stated before, the most common definition of a hero is someone who acts selflessly. Usually in these cases, the individual only has to prove this trait one time. This lone act could possibly save lives and inspire others. Many people define a hero this way because of the value placed on life. If someone could do something to protect this valuable thing, they well deserved praise. For example, if an altercation on a subway train turns violent and a man pulls out a weapon he becomes an immediate threat to every passenger on the train. A woman then tackles the man, disarming him. By doing this the woman saved countless lives on the train, as well as hers. Because she risked her life to save others, she would be considered a hero. These are people who have a direct influence on an individual. This could be a family member, friend, or even just a member of society. Reasons as to why a person would consider someone a hero can vary. If a child considers their parent their hero, it could be for many reasons. The parent could provide emotional support for the child and that in itself could be enough for them to be considered a hero. These definitions are based on personal observations and justifications.
