In Hamlet, virtually all of the action is centered on the concept of violence. Shakespeare makes this clear in Hamlet's first appearance in the play, all the way to the last scene of the play.
The violence of act III, scene 4 of Hamlet, in which Hamlet confronts his mother and kills Polonius, is just one of the many examples of how Shakespeare uses violence to help showcase important aspects of Hamlet. Before the play even begins, Hamlet’s uncle has murdered his father in order to secure the throne for himself. Everyone in the book in some way fears Hamlet or looks down on him. They think he’s crazy, aggressive, and they treat him with disrespect. Hamlet distresses everyone around him. He then gets into a fight with Ophelia’s brother, Laertres. By the end of the play, people lie dead everywhere, Hamlet himself is poisoned and people still questioning the jealousy, rage, and revenge that had happened.
The main theme in Hamlet is revenge. Shakespeare uses revenge to justify most of the violence in his plays. Shakespeare’s plays have a common theme of violence. One play of Shakespeare similar to Hamlet is The Tempest. This is a play that leads the characters to violence and murder to help deal with their own problems. Hamlet had accepted his father’s charge to avenge his death. He began a series of violence that he himself was unable to stop. When Hamlet confronts Gertrude, Gertrude said “O, what a rash and bloody deed is this!” And Hamlet replies, “A bloody deed! Almost as bad, good mother, as kill a king, and marry with his brother”(Shakespeare 178).
