According to Science Made Simple, “Science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena”(Science Made Simple, 2013). To me, science is making sense of the world around us through proven facts. Science gives us the ability to work together on both small scales and large to collect data to increase our quality of life. In the thesaurus, a synonym for science is knowledge. Science is all about finding out information about the world and building on that information to discover even more. Without great collaboration and work most natural phenomenons could go unsolved.

Some defining characteristics of science are precision, perseverance, and progression. For example the progression of medicine of AIDS. AIDS “is the final stage of HIV infection, and not everyone who has HIV advances to this stage. People at this stage of HIV disease have badly damaged immune systems, which put them at risk for opportunistic infections” (Aids.gov, 2014). Therefore since child development is a part of psychology, child development is scientific. Like Scientists, developmentalists work with precision, perseverance, and progression. Development is the change in an individual over time. The job of a developmentalist is to examine a person’s progression and behaviors as they age. “Human developmentalists carefully observe the behavior of people of different ages, seeking to catalog how people change over time”(Developmental Psychology, 2014, p.5) Because child development has to do with the change in ages, it requires much time and perseverance just like science.
