I have always asked the question, “What is money?” Often, I would get replies like it measures success, generates happiness, clothes me, and buys affection. Yes, money can do many things. But for me, I define money as an irresistible friend or foe, depending on the situation. Money establishes a type of influential power which creates acceptance into high-society, but it can also lead to building relationships for the wrong reasons. As a child, my family and friends told me money contributes to success and happiness. They would say phrases like, “To be successful you need to have a good job that pays a lot” and shoved that idea down my throat my whole life. But does money truly measure success or happiness? Are people too driven by the colossal mansion, with a ten-car garage and a six-figure bank account? Do people really need luxury items? Are people too driven by jealousy and desire? Can a person be happy without money? These questions contain a massive thought process that many people are not ready to evaluate because they are too busy chasing money like a zombie chasing a brain. As a biology major, I have been told correlation does not equal causation. In terms of the world, money is related to happiness. However, money does not create happiness. When people are misinformed about money and happiness they become obsessed with an illogical notion and lose the meaning of happiness for themselves. People need to realize happiness lies in the actions we make. We as humans actualize happiness through the actions and words we choose to focus on. For instance, a student in school can measure wealth by the knowledge they learn from school and through daily encounters while a fisherman would need wealth in the form of a fishing rod, a fish net, a boat, and workers. So, to hand both people a wallet filled with cash is of somewhat little use to them as it is to give a farmer infertile cattle as a source of income. This rooted confusion about wealth and money is now the primary reason several young adults have a difficult time discovering what they want to do in life. Regardless, people will continue to deny this concept because, as humans, they are programmed to believe their truth is the absolute truth. It is never easy to find one complete definition of wealth because wealth is immeasurable and its meaning varies depending on the individual.
