Imagine being ripped out of your own camp and thrown into a camp. Imagine starving and working until certain death. Imagine trying not to lose faith in that situation. From time to time everyone struggles with loss of faith. This is an occurring theme in the book “Night” where Elie Wiesel also deals with this. Whatever reason can cause this occur no matter how large or small. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel uses repetition, foreshadowing ,and tone to explain his loss of faith.
In night Elie is thrust into to situations that cause him to question his faith. One literary device that describes this is repetition.Repetition is starting a sentence with the first same few words to express how people are feeling and have you better understand the situation. “Never shall i forget the smoke that consumed my faith (34). Never shall I forget the moments that murdered my god and turned my dreams into ashes (34). These two quotes clearly show a loss in faith in Elie using repetition. Foreshadowing hints at what might happen next in the story. Elie used foreshadowing to show loss of faith when one of the Jews from his town was captured. “Without passion or haste, they shot the prisoners who were forced to approach the trench and offer their necks” (6). After this happened the other Jews in town never believed the captured Jew. After no one had believed the Jew he lost faith because the other Jews had no idea what was going to happen to them later on in the story which is an example of foreshadowing. There is a lady in night in the camp with Elie. She is abandoned by her family and separated in the camp. “The separation had totally shattered her”(24). This foreshadows what might happen to Elie later on in the story when his father dies. That would cause him to lose
