There are many great explorers in the history of the world. Some may be more notable than others, but they all contributed to how the world is today. Among these explorers, Walter Raleigh is one if the more notable ones. Raleigh helped greatly in the movement to colonize in America in the 1500’s. Aside from this achievement, Walter Raleigh had other notable stories as his role as an explorer. Walter Raleigh was a well-known adventurer in the 1500’s, he was greatly favored by Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh, in his time, sparked English colonization in America (Sherman 12-14). Raleigh was born in the mid 1500’s and grew up in a farmhouse in Devon. He was the youngest of five siblings, and raised as a Protestant (‘Walter Raleigh”). Raleigh served as a soldier when he was 17 years of age, he fought with the French Huguenots (“Walter Raleigh”). Raleigh aspired to be famous, he wanted to build a positive reputation for himself as an explorer. His first attempt at this was a failure. Raleigh changed England’s view on America as an obstacle to see it as potential for England (Winton 47). Raleigh hoped to explore America’s north coast, as it was virgin territory (Winton 49). In attempts to colonize America, Raleigh sent out an expedition to settle on Roanoke Island. A political emergency forced Raleigh to take focus off the expedition, after the emergency, Raleigh sent a supply ship to Roanoke Island to find that the colony had disappeared (Shostak 191). One of Raleigh’s other attempts to colonize Virgina failed; the colonist refused to work and they had hostile encounters with Native Americans. Julien was transporting Spanish soldiers to Cadiz in the pursuit of a treaty with the Vervins. Champlain got an opportunity to accompany his uncle for his first navigation trip. The travel to Roanoke Island didn't trouble John White and they successfully set anchor on Roanoke in July 22, 1587. Looking at the early English colonies in the Chesapeake Bay region, it’s clear that the English had not learned any lessons from their experiences at Roanoke. Poor planning, a bad location, unrealistic expectations, flawed leadership, unsuccessful relations with the local Indians, and no hope of finding the mineral wealth the Spanish found in Mexico, all contributed to failure. The first colonists in the Chesapeake region were not only ignorant, lazy and unambitious, but their attempts were hampered before they had begun. However, a solution to these problems was found in a single plant: tobacco. Nevertheless, this cash crop ultimately created numerous problems for the colonists. The ignorance and indolent acts of the Chesapeake colonists to unsuccessfully restore the colony by themselves led to the demise of the colony as a whole especially regarding the planting of agricultural goods for food.
The Virginians became greedier for land and started to grow tobacco all over Jamestown. This encouraged the wide use of plantations that required surplus labor. Seven years later, in 1619, a Dutch warship sold the Virginians African slaves, creating the seed of slave trade. Thus the use of indentured slaves decreased and was replaced with African slaves as triangular trade (trans-Atlantic slave trade) increased.

Spain and France were the most dominant of the European countries, but internal conflicts in France made it weak, while Spain was getting extremely wealthy off of Indians and the Aztecs. England saw this as an opportunity to expand into the New World, and had Walter Raleigh head the trip. The main goals of the colony were to expanding their efforts of privateering, with a sustainable colony as an after thought. It was initial devised as a way to intercept merchant ships more effectively from other countries (mainly Spain) and be a short-term base of operations. Most if not all of the men brought over had only military experience, so they struggled with building proper housing, getting clean water, and growing crops. John Rolfe played a major role in history in 1614 when he found a way to harvest tobacco. The tobacco crop is what restored Jamestown, Virginia and it would not exist today without this cash crop. Restoring Jamestown is not the only significance the tobacco crop holds; it is also responsible for the early stages of slavery. Since tobacco became the cash crop of Virginia, it was more in demand. There was a shortage of laborers to plant and harvest the tobacco crop and as a result settlers were unable to meet the European quota for tobacco. Since it was increasing in demand more laborers were needed to maintain these large plantations ; therefore more indentured servants were needed. The motives of the founders of the colonies in each region played a significant part in the regions development. Sir Walter Raleigh and the Virginia Company, a joint-stock company, were among the first to try to develop settlements in the New World. Their motive to establish Roanoke and Jamestown in the Chesapeake region was primarily to make money. Thus the constant reminder that their first goal was to make profits influenced the settlers of Virginia. However, this conviction for making profits almost was the collapse of the colony for its settlers were more interested in finding gold then building shelter and growing food, finally found its outlet in the cash crop, tobacco, which John Rolfe perfected. Virginians were already greedy and self-centered. They were more concerned about personal gain than equality, and so the different levels of society appeared. Life centered on plantations, and so the rich planters were most important. Their constant need for labor source led to the introduction of land grants and indentured servants through the head-right system. In addition, the Carolinas, proprietary colonies created by Lord Berekley et al, was established strictly to profit the proprietor which they eventually did due also to cash crops.
The Roanoke colony was located on the Roanoke Island, in Dare County. This is where North Carolina is located today. In 1584, explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the first Europeans to set view the island. They were sent to that particular region by Sir Walter Raleigh with the assignment of exploring the extensive sounds and estuaries in hunt of an ideal location for settlement. Barlowe wrote bright information of Roanoke Island, and when the explorers returned to England a year afterward with two Natives, Manteo and Wanchese, all of London was abuzz with chat of the New World’s wonders.Queen Elizabeth, impressed with the results of the reconnaissance voyage, knighted Raleigh as a reward. The new ground was named “Virginia” in respect of the Virgin Queen, and the next year, Raleigh sent a gathering of 100 militia, miners and scientists to Roanoke Island. It was a late 16th century attempt for England to establish a permanent settlement. Queen Elizabeth 1 was queen at the time. The attempt was put together and financed by Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Exploration of the east coast with intentions of finding land appropriate for building a colony began in the early part of 1584 by Sir Walter Raleigh, who had been issued a charter to do so by England's Queen Elizabeth I. After significant exploration, the expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe touched the area of what is now known as the North Carolina coast in the vicinity of Hatteras. It was Roanoke Island that was finally chosen as the site of colonization because of what they thought was a convenient placement ten miles off the mainland of North Carolina. In fact, the final report presented to Raleigh by the two explorers boasted of a bountiful land inhabited by friendly and benevolent natives.
The first effort by the English to establish a colony in the New World was when Sir Walter Raleigh issued a charter to establish a colony at Roanoke. It was the responsibility of Raleigh to make the necessary provisions to complete the journeys to the New World and accomplish the goals of the charter. This entailed hiring ship captains and their crews, recruiting possible colonists, purchasing food and other supplies, and finding those who would invest capital in the missions. Raleigh however did not actively participate in the journeys to Roanoke Island; he was just the organizer and major financier.
The Chesapeake region of the colonies included Virginia, Maryland, the New Jerseys (both East and West) and Pennsylvania. In 1607, Jamestown, the first English colony in the New World (that is, the first to thrive and prosper), was founded by a group of 104 settlers to a peninsula along the James River. These settlers hoped to find gold, silver, a northwest passage to Asia, a cure for syphilis, or any other valuables they might take back to Europe and make a profit. Lead by Captain John Smith, who "outmaneuvered other members of the colony's ruling and took ruthlessly took charge" (Liberty Equality Power, p. 57), a few lucky members of the original voyage survived. These survivors turned to the local Powhatan Indians, who taught them the process of corn- and tobacco-growing. These staple-crops flourished throughout all five of these colonies.
The English had two main colonies in the new world, Jamestown and Plymouth. The first colony was Jamestown, established in Virginia in 1607. Jamestown was settled by Captain John Smith, and was named after King James I. Tobacco was the main export of Jamestown, and became the basis of the Jamestown economy, sending more than 50,000 lbs of the plan back to Europe by 1618 (textbook 46). Jamestown had a very rocky start, many colonists dying in the first few years of the settlement, and the settlers had many problems with natives. Shortly after the arrival of English colonists the Natives attacked them, and were finally forced back by a canon from the English. A very uneasy truce was finally settled between the natives, called the Powhatans, and the English (textbook 44-5). Economic growth and expanding their territories were the main priorities of the English in the Jamestown colonies.
