There are many great explorers in the history of the world. Some may be more notable than others, but they all contributed to how the world is today. Among these explorers, Walter Raleigh is one if the more notable ones. Raleigh helped greatly in the movement to colonize in America in the 1500’s. Aside from this achievement, Walter Raleigh had other notable stories as his role as an explorer. Walter Raleigh was a well-known adventurer in the 1500’s, he was greatly favored by Queen Elizabeth I. Raleigh, in his time, sparked English colonization in America (Sherman 12-14). Raleigh was born in the mid 1500’s and grew up in a farmhouse in Devon. He was the youngest of five siblings, and raised as a Protestant (‘Walter Raleigh”). Raleigh served as a soldier when he was 17 years of age, he fought with the French Huguenots (“Walter Raleigh”). Raleigh aspired to be famous, he wanted to build a positive reputation for himself as an explorer. His first attempt at this was a failure. Raleigh changed England’s view on America as an obstacle to see it as potential for England (Winton 47). Raleigh hoped to explore America’s north coast, as it was virgin territory (Winton 49). In attempts to colonize America, Raleigh sent out an expedition to settle on Roanoke Island. A political emergency forced Raleigh to take focus off the expedition, after the emergency, Raleigh sent a supply ship to Roanoke Island to find that the colony had disappeared (Shostak 191). One of Raleigh’s other attempts to colonize Virgina failed; the colonist refused to work and they had hostile encounters with Native Americans.
