The English were late to colonize in North America with a lack of political unity primarily to blame. There were hopes that this venture to North America could expand mercantilism and increase their income. When they finally arrived in North America they were met with a lot of hardship. Most of the first colonies they attempted to establish were failures. As they established the colony of Virginia they had many blunders a long the way. They had unrealistic expectations, flawed leadership, troubled relations with the local Powhatan Indians, and a lack of economic viability (Oakes, 60). Have you ever heard of “Early Jamestown?” The year was 1607, roughly, 110 English men arrived on the coast of Virginia, to search for gold, which the Spaniards also had begun a search for and found an abundance of gold. It is the first permanent English colony in what is now the United States. ‘Early’ Jamestown entails the first five years of settlement in the Americas. The question is ‘Why did so many colonist die?’ Colonist died in early Jamestown because of three problems. These problems were the environmental issues, the relationships with the Native Americans, and the lack of skills the colonist brought with them to Jamestown.
Although the English were not the first Europeans to explore or colonize North America, their settlements along the Eastern seaboard became the thirteen colonies that later formed the United States. England relied on private trading companies to establish a presence in North America. Two of these groups, the Virginia Company was the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. “ The Jamestown colony was modeled after a military expedition, transplanting about 100 hardy Englishmen into the Virginia…”(Smith 3). Since it was easier to grow grain and livestock in the Mid-Atlantic region, there was a diverse group of farmers, fishermen, and merchants who worked in those colonies. The environmental conditions were ideal for farms of various sizes and the Middle colonists could trade in market areas where the colonial regions met. Although a lot of money could be made by growing tobacco (in Maryland especially) and other cash crops, they were bad for the soil and people needed more land. However, this resulted in a newfound lack of labor, which was an issue. For instance, families procreated too slowly, there was a high infant mortality rate, African slaves cost too much, and, according to the colonists, Native Americans didn’t make good slaves. Eventually white indentured servants from Europe were recruited to work on plantations, but it was a difficult life for them- even after they were freed they continued to earn low wages. The establishment of colonies in America took place within distinct circumstances. Some colonies were founded for the purpose of political and religious havens and pursuit of individual freedom and happiness. People came to the New World expecting a place where the rules in the Old World, such as hereditary aristocracies and dominance of church and state, would not apply. Other colonies such as the Carolinas, and Pennsylvania were established by either proprietors, or individuals who had an ideal for a place that could embrace everyone with his/her own will. Thesis: The Roanoke colony proved to be an unsuccessful venture in the New World for England, since leaders of the expedition held the viewpoint that privateering would prove to be the most profitable aspect of founding the new settlements in the West. However future, still unsuccessful attempts to make a permanent colony at Roanoke, helped England understand how to build a prosperous one; and it became a building block for establishing future colonies for England and helped shape the ideas that would help launch their empire.
It was a long journey, but the promise od succes drove them forward. English settlers have finally arrived in Chesapeake bay. Author Edward S. Morgan described the Jamestown colony as a group that had many opportunities for success but failed to succeed due to their own negligence. Edward Morgan describes Captain Christopher Newport’s experience to the new world as he journeys through the coast of the what is now known as North America. According to author Morgan, Captain Newport was able to survey the land and establish English rule through communication with the neighboring indian tribes. Morgan describes the attack from the Powhatans on the English tribe of Jamestown. He exclaims jamestown was attacked and viciously forced into an uneasy truths with the natives. Throughout the early inhabitants of the Englishmen in the new world, Morgan believes many mistakes were made in their efforts to develop a relationship with the Native Americans. There were many reasons why the colonists came to North America. One reason was because they wanted to escape King Edward so they could fallow freely their own religion and to seek riches. Also the Puritans came to North America because they wanted a lace to practice their religion without fear of the government. Also that the religion they wanted to practice was considered more fundamentalist than what was being practiced from where they came. the English colonies were successful in North America was because the British tried so many times to get more money the colonists got mad and boycotted- refuse to use-the British goods. Then the British government kind of loosened their restraints and gave the American colonists some freedom.
Before Columbus and the Europeans, there was a time where there were many struggles and many ideas not even thought yet. All of this changed when the ancient civilizations started to live in the Americas. This was a time when ancient civilizations expanded brought the Americas and had a unique way of living. The ancient civilizations in the Americans and in Europe were different from cultures, adaptations, and foods.
It was a difficult life for the first colonists; they had limited labor and were constantly raided by Native Americans. Colonists tried to use the Native Americans as a source of slavery. Most of the colonist’s farms were in forest areas so Native Americans would just leave in to the woods. Colonists were afraid of pressuring them from the fear of getting ambushed by gangs of Native Americans. Another reason Native American men made bad slaves was because the women in the tribes did the agricultural work in the Native American villages.
The English then took advantage of them and during the “starving time” and began to forcefully take food, which caused conflict. It was even worse for the indians at the time because Virginia was going through a drought period, when food resources were especially low. The colonists were scared for their lives as they had saw so many of their own people pass away from starvation. This was their motivation for attacking the indians and starting a fight with them. The New World left many challenges to settlers seeking a new life in a place that offered so much glory and chances to start over for themselves. Some nations had been much more successful than others, whether it was through expansion, farming, or finding riches. Colonization had been much different for each nation because of the diversity in the terrain they were colonizing. Spain had been placed geographically in an area that is much warmer than that of the land England was given. England had started colonizing an area that was much harsher in the winter but offered great farming in the summer, overall it proved to be devastating for the new colonies.
Throughout the colonial period, both economic and religious concerns contributed to the settling of British North America. The statement that the "economic concerns had more to do with the settling of British North America than did religious concerns" is valid. These economic concerns, as a cause for the colonization of British North America, outweighed the notable religious concerns that arose, and dominated colonial life during and up until the very end of the British colonial era in North America.
During the 17th century, Europeans had unquestionably come to North America to stay, a fact that signaled major changes for the people of both hemispheres. At first, the English sought to benefit from the New Found land by trading across the continents, but later many English people decided to migrate to North America. Unlike other Europeans, the English transferred their society and politics to their new environment. American English (AmE, AE, AmEng, USEng, en-US), also known as United States English or U.S. English, is a set of dialects of the English language used mostly in the United States. It was the first major variety of the language that developed outside of Britain(Kretzschmar, W.2000). The spread of English resulted within the first diaspora which relatively involved large-scale migrations of mother-tongue English speakers from England, Scotland,and Ireland predominantly to, Australia, New Zealand and North America. The language that they brought with them changed over time (Kachru, B.1992). Since then, American English has been influenced by the languages of successive waves of immigrants to the US. For the purpose of this essay, I will briefly discuss the spread of English to America and describe the phonological,lexical and syntactical features of American Englishwith relevant examples.
