On October 9th, 1919 the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Soxs the heavily favored team ten to five (Solomon, Alan). Rumors were flying from before the first pitch was thrown about if the game was fixed game. Then months after the bad world series game people started to say that gamblers paid off some off the white sox players to intentionally lose the game. The team exchanged tips about throwing the world series so there were eight people involved in throwing the world series. They knew it was gonna be a difficult and risky thing to try to throw the world series and get away with it. The players that were involved too was, pitchers Eddie cicotte and claude ‘’lefty’’ williams (Andrews, Evan). Shortstop charles swede risberg and outfielder oscar ‘’happy’’ felsch, third basemen buck wever. Infielder fred mcmullin and the power hitter shoeless joe jackson. The world series started and the fix was going as planned the white sox were lost the first nine to one and lost three more and then. It all changed when the white sox player got way less from the gamblers then they were supposed to so they called the fix off and started to play to win and they came back winning game six. On July 27 1959, A new York attorney named William shea had an idea of putting a new baseball team in new York since the dodgers and giants had left for california.So on march 1st 1961 His wish was granted.The new York metropolitan baseball club or “the new York mets” were introduced into the national league.The name of the team was chosen by owner Joan Payson.The other names that were put into thought were the rebels, skyliners, nybs and avengers just to name a few.On April 11,1962 the mets played their first game in franchise history and lost 11-4 to the St Louis cardinals.The first season was a miserable one.Manager Casey Stengel led the mets to a 62-100 record,The worst record in major league history.After a couple of more losing seasons, The mets finally made a move and signed pitcher Tom “the franchise”Seaver,one of the best pitchers who ever played the game. They also picked up power hitting outfielders Donn Clendenon and Tommie Agee. Finally the mets looked like a baseball team.Entering the 1969 season, my father said the mets wewr 160-1 to win the World Series, but the mets shocked everyone winning the national league championship. Now, this is how the mets won their first world series, The batter was cleon Jones, after striking out manager Gil Hodges notices a black mark on the ball. The black mark was shoe polish. Putting shoe polish on the ball makes it spin more and makes it much easier to strike out a batter.
As the decade opened up with the year 1950, the Yankees were celebrating an American League Pennant and a World Series victory from the previous year. It was apparent in 1950 that the team had not taken too much time off as the team posted a 98-56 regular season record, winning their second straight Pennant and a trip to the World Series where they would match up against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1950, the Phillies were known as the Whiz kids because of their youth and amazing talent, but in the series against the Yankees they were swept in 4 games thanks to Joe DiMaggio- a legend in Major League baseball- and Phil Rizzuto- a shortstop who would enjoy one of his most productive seasons as well as the honor of earning American League MVP. Whitey Ford, a rookie pitcher for the Yanks, also enjoyed a stand out career, winning all 9 of his starts and losing only one game in relief. (Baseball History)
The 1919 World series resulted in the most famous Scandal in Baseball history. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the series against the Reds and were banned from Major League Baseball. (“History files-Chicago Black Sox”) All eight players were expelled in an attempt to save the purity of the game. The White Sox lost the opening game of the series nine to one, and then ended up losing the series five games to three. 1910 to 1920 was the one of the greatest decades for Major League Baseball. Many amazing events occurred during this decade; although, some devastating and extremely sad events also occurred. Half of these years were taken up by war, even many Hall of Fame players served. This decade still ended up being a great one for Major League Baseball. From Hall of Fame greats to Negro League pitchers, this decade produced greats. The 1910’s also set up the 1920’s for amazing players too.

In terms of racial inequality in baseball there have been many eras of integration. Baseball originally is seen as America’s national game belonging to the white men of America. However, throughout history there have been steps taken in recognizing and integrating those groups deemed “less favorable” by the American community. These groups include German immigrants, Irish immigrants, African Americans, Latinos, Native Hawaiians, Native Americans, and Asians. America used the game of baseball as a tool to indoctrinate the American ideals and values of teamwork, working hard, and collaborating for the greater good into the cultures of the “uncivilized world.” These groups used baseball as a medium to gain acceptance into the American community as racially equal counterparts.

Gambling has been part of baseball ever since it was invented, but sometimes, unfortunately, it is done by active players or managers, not just the fans. Way back in the year of 1919 there was a huge scandal regarding the White Sox. The White Sox were facing the Reds in the World Series that season. Eight players from the White Sox organization bet money that they would lose the World Series. Throughout the series they would mess up on purpose to cause their own team to lose. More recently, Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling. Although, he claims that he only bet on his team to win.
