How Did The Arts Affect Vincent Van Gogh's Life

Art affects everyone differently, and with me there are very few artists that affect me at all. Vincent Van Gogh’s artwork makes me see another perspective, another world much different than my own. Van Gogh’s life was plagued by mental illness, the extent of which varied throughout his life and is visible is his work. I believe his artwork was greatly influenced by his early life and mental health, especially The Starry Night, Café Terrace at Night, and Sorrow.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30th, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands. At an early age of 15, van Gogh's parents were dealing with financial problems and he was obligated to drop out of school and help support the family by obtaining a job. He received a position at his relatives’ working as an art merchant. In the summer of 1873, van Gogh was reassigned to the Goupil Gallery in London, where he was infatuated with the English culture. He would stop at art galleries in his sparse time, and also happen to be a fan of the literatures of Charles Dickens.

I enjoy this piece because it captures how romantic and magical France streets are at night. The attention to detail in this painting makes it so miraculous. The enforcement of darkness leading up to the café helps capture the liveliness of the business, and the artificial lighting hitting the cobblestone street has the same emotional effect as Christmas lights hitting a shiny present beneath the tree. Many of the best things in life cannot be described in words, and the feeling that a fall night in Paris gives is one of them.
