As Robin Sharma once said, “Leadership is not a popularity contest; it's about leaving your ego at the door. The name of the game is to lead without a title.” Popularity has to do with the state of being liked and well known. Everyone in the world wants to be popular not to just have friends, but rather to build a reputation for themselves so people will always remember them. Especially in politics, our supreme leaders or candidates wish to be popular in the eyes of the citizens to gain support and win elected positions. Stalin, as leader of the Soviet Union, wanted to be liked by the people in his effort to control all aspects of the citizens lives. As head of a totalitarian regime, Stalin gained his popularity from his Five Year Plan, the constant use of propaganda, and his reforms to better the lives of the citizens. Stalin’s Five Year Plan was a major aid in his journey to gain popularity from the Soviet people. His Five Year Plan was aimed at improving the economy, building industry, and improving agriculture conditions. Stalin was not the most popular leader due to his terror tactics that instilled fear in the citizen’s; however, he attempted to make up for it. Throughout his reign, Stalin thought about the benefit of the citizens and was not a selfless leader, rather did everything to make the people happy and gain support. Stalin had an extremely big ego, but the only way to develop an ego as large as his was to gain popularity and boost morale. As a man who enjoyed to be a “godlike figure”, his popularity meant great deals to him and he managed to gain some even though he wasn’t the ideal leader.
