Jazz, considered an American music, took root in New Orleans and spread throughout the nation and world, with the it’s influence shown in the modern era. In a television is aired, other music is played, or a cartoon is shown, Jazz has instrumented a key role in the forming of American Culture. Jazz contains many qualities that distinguish it from other groups, the origin influences, the qualities, and the lasting impact Jazz has left on the modern world.
To understand Jazz’s influence on modern society one must first understand the influences that shaped Jazz into what it is today. According to Dirk Sutru, a music journalist, discusses in his researched text “Jazz: For Dummies,” Jazz music originated from slaves when African Americans were brought over in 1619 to Jamestown, Virginia. Armstrong reshaped Jazz music into a similar structure of what is heard today, and he’s playing brought into the Jazz scene an emphasis on the improvisations and solos. Another great trumpeter during the 20th century was Miles Davis, who brought to Jazz a constant progression and innovation, states Bill Milkowski, in his text “Legends of Jazz.” Miles Davis, considered a Picasso, due to the constant innovation and changes he brought to Jazz, when the young Jazz listeners started to take an interest in Rock performers like Jimi Hendrix, Davis formed a new style of Jazz that was a composition of the characteristics of Jazz and Rock instrumentation and structure.
