Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 and her birth name was Araminta; she later took the first name of her mother, Harriet Ross though. Harriet got remarried on March 18, 1869, to Nelson Danis. In 1874 they adopted a girl who they named Gertie. Nelson Davis (Harriet’s husband) suffered from Tuberculosis and could not hold a steady job, leaving Harriet responsible for the household. Harriet died on March 10, 1913, but today she would be 196 years old. Although that was Harriet’s home life she is famous for something far more greater. She helped free slaves through the underground railroad. She became known as “the Moses of her People”. After escaping herself she went back for years and saved over 300 people from slavery. Harriet Tubman was originally named Araminta Ross. She was one of 11 children born to Harriet Greene and Benjamin Ross on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. She later took her mother's first name. Harriet was working at the age of five. She was a maid and a children's nurse before she worked in the field when she was 12. A year later, a white guy either her watcher or her master smacked her on the head with a really heavy weight. The hit was so hard it left her with permanent neurological damage. The story of Harriet Jacobs begins in North Carolina. In 1813 she was born into slavery, though she didn’t realize that she was a slave, stating “I was born a slave; but I never knew it. ”(Jacobs 1809-1829). Jacobs was with her mother until her death in 1819, then she lived with Margaret Horniblow, her mother’s mistress. Horniblow taught Jacobs to read, write, and sew, then in 1825 she died and willed Jacobs to her five year old niece.

As a child, Tubman was “hired out” to various masters who were mean and cruel to her (Civil War, 2014). She suffered a terrible head injury at the hands of one of these cruel slave masters that caused her to have seizures and “visions” for the rest of her life, which she believed were sent from God (Civil War, 2014). In 1840, Tubman’s father was granted freedom as a results of a stipulation of his master’s will, but continued to work for his former owner’s family (Civil War, 2014). Araminta and the rest of her family were supposed to be granted freedom as well, but the law was ignored and kept the rest of the family enslaved (Civil War, 2014). In 1844, Araminta married a free black man and changed her name from Araminta Ross to Harriet Tubman (Civil War, 2014). In 1849, Tubman became critically ill with complications from her head injury, which led to her owner deciding to sell her, but he could not find a buyer (Civil War, 2014). After his own sudden death, the family began selling all of their slaves (Civil War, 2014). Not wanting the rest of her family to be separated, Tubman was determined to escape (Civil War, 2014).

They disregarded her as a person or as an equal, making her sleep and share food with the dogs. The Cooks did not have enough money to keep her, so they gave her back. As an adolescent, Harriet Tubman had a hardship brought upon her. She was accidently struck with a 20 pound weight tossed by her furious master on her forehead. This event caused her to suffer a serious recuperation as she lived with the inability to remember simple things for the remainder of her life. For the duration of her life she endured deep sleeps, or uncontrolled rest that conquered her all of a sudden as an aftereffect of the damage received by the weight. She had faith in her beliefs, and knew that even though she was risking jail time, she was doing the right thing. Civil disobedience is is when people are trying to bring attention to a law. They break that law knowing that they might go to jail, but to them it is worth it. Harriet Tubman’s involvement in Civil Disobedience was done to influences she chose to participate in Civil Disobedience to protest slavery, and she did achieve success using the controversial method of standing up for what she strongly believes to be right.
