The Northern states gave blacks some freedom, unlike the Southern states. The national population was 31,000,000 and four and one-half, were African American. Free african males had some limits with their freedom. There were many political, social, or economic restrictions placed on the freedom of free blacks in the North, but the three most important are, Political and Judicial Rights, Social Freedom, and Economic.

Slavery allowed the American economy to flourish for over 300 years. It allowed many Southern states to grow at a furious pace without significantly diversifying their economy. The South relied on the harvesting of cash crops such as tobacco and cotton, which were very labor intensive. Without much cheap labor, slaves were relied on to harvest the crops; this provided enormous value to farmers and plantation owners in the region. However, the institution of slavery was challenged in the 18th century by decades of Enlightenment thought, newfound religious ideals, and larger abolitionist groups. After the American Revolution many states would ban the practice of slavery completely and only a few would maintain the “peculiar institution”.
The Revolution had a contradictory impact on American notions of freedom, in terms of slavery. During the 18th century the understanding of freedom began to be known as a “universal entitlement, rather than a set of rights to a particular place or people” (Foner, 233). Thus, it was inevitable that questions about the status of slavery would arise.

However, before the Civil War, slavery was as common as owning a dog today. Many in the United States, particularly in the South, viewed slavery as a “positive good” and owned slaves that were crucial to their business and income. However, the Civil War then changed the lifestyle of many southerners in a negative way. After the Civil War, slavery was abolished and any man owning a slave was required to let them free and view them as an equal. This was a difficult thing to do and eventually led to a downfall and destroyed economy in the southern United States. Abolishing slavery hurt the country economically and socially at the time and slavery was socially acceptable.
Who would have thought that the issue of abolition would be the ultimate test of leadership for George Washington? On April 12, 1786, Washington wrote a letter to Robert Morris expressing both his political and personal stance on the issue of abolition. Washington condemns the Society of Quakers for attempting to liberate the slave of Mr. Dalby by claiming they lacked the legal authority to do so. While putting his personal stance aside, Washington makes a practical argument claiming that the only true authority that can abolish slavery was the national legislature. In order to preserve the newly formed nation, Washington provides a valid argument condemning Philadelphia’s freedom law by respecting the rights of the slave owners while making strides towards the legitimacy of the national legislature.

In 1833 Parliament finally abolished slavery itself, both in Britain and throughout the British Empire. Why, when the slave trade and the plantations in the West Indies seemed to be making so much money, were they abolished? It was due to a mixture of white campaigners, slaves and economics of the slave trade which finally brought slavery to an end.
