Emily Dickinson wrote the poem Because I could not stop for death because she lived much of her life in seclusion which caused her to daydream about death. The poem talks about a women meeting death and describing ‘him’ as being kind. In the poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death, Emily Dickinson uses personification and imagery to show a peaceful tone in order to convey that through death one can find tranquility in the afterlife. Emily not only describes him to be kind but also civil. When the woman is in the carriage with death she talks about the things she put away for him. The woman her life work and rest “for his civility”(Dickinson 8). Death is being described not only as kind but as polite. He was not rushing and he was being an actual gentleman by being courteous and polite. By personifying death as a kind and courteous person Dickinson shows us that death should not be scary but rather accepted. Emily Dickinson not only personified death but she also used imagery to show us that eternal life is not lonely. The woman in the poem reminisces about her childhood memories, like playing on the playground at school. The image of the children playing and the grain ready to be harvested. The image of “we passed the setting sun” tells the author that she is thinking about the life she has had (Dickinson 12).
