The Civil Rights Movement gave freedom and rights to African Americans. During this time period there were many people who greatly impacted this movement and helped African Americans gain these desirable aspects of being a United States citizen. Two of those people were Sarah and Angelina Grimke. Together, Sarah and Angelina Grimke inspired people all around the nation to join the North in abolishing slavery by publishing powerful pieces of writing and delivering eloquent speeches which included personal stories of their experiences with slavery from their childhood.

They committed themselves to helping the efforts in Anti-Slavery Movement. At first they started off small, Angelina Grimke learned about the violent riots in Charleston in which rioters publicly burned Anti-slavery pamphlets. She later read a newspaper article written by William Lloyd Garrison that urged the citizens to stop the violence. She felt that he needed support and wrote him a letter of encouragement in which she stated that he should “never surrender” and referred to the Anti-slavery movement as “a cause worth dying for.” After receiving this inspiring letter, Garrison published it in his newspaper. The letter quickly caught national attention and Angelina Grimke became well known throughout the North (Berkin). From that point on, the two sisters began to take upon themselves a larger role in the abolition of slavery. In 1837 they began to give speeches to small groups of women in their homes, however their audience grew rapidly both in numbers and diversity and these meetings were soon moved to larger buildings, most commonly churches. Men began to attend these speeches, which aroused controversy because other men and some religious leaders did not believe that it was a woman's place to be involved in any kind of public speaking, especially when they were addressing both men and women (Berkin). These two southern sisters who had broken away from their family’s slaveholding plantation and moved to the North to fight for the abolition of slavery were very impactful and important in the progression of the Civil Rights Movement. Together Sarah and Angelina Grimke were able to find success by attracting a great diversity of people to join the Civil Rights Movement and help to gain support for the North.
