Question#1: What are the key missions and goals identified in the 2012 Department of Homeland Security Strategic Plan?

The Department of Homeland Security Strategic Plan, passed during the Obama Administration in February 2012, contains seven key missions and goals. According to the textbook, the missions identified are:preventing terrorism and enhancing security; securing & managing our borders; enforcing & administering our immigration laws, Safeguarding & Securing Cyberspace, Ensuring resilience to disasters, providing support to national and economic security and mature & Strengthen DHS (Oliver, pg. 166)

DHS accomplishes this by receiving customs revenue (i.e import tax on goods brought into the U.S.); providing security for maritime safety, and law enforcement interdiction.

The final mission is improving the strength of DHS, with the goal of enhancing management function, enlarge Department analytical abilities and strengthening counterintelligence capabilities. The DHS needs to improve on information sharing amongst other Federal Agencies and further develop international agreements with allied nations.

In conclusion, the 2012 Department of Homeland Security Strategic Plan is the current evolution that guides national response policy for terrorist attacks and other disasters since 9-11. The Plan outlines seven primary missions and goals to guide law enforcement, military, and citizens to a safe, secure, and resilient America against the ever present threat of Terrorism and Natural Disasters.
