Catcher in the Rye Essay Lies are all too common, in the world of Holden Caulfield. J.D. Salinger’s timeless classic, the Catcher in the Rye, is a coming-of-age story, in which the protagonist, Holden, flees from his school, Pencey Prep, after he is expelled, wanting to leave on his own terms. Following this, he spends several days in New York City, waiting to go home until the day he was supposed to return from school. When examined more closely, the events of the plot make it evident that Holden is more in flight from lies than in search of truth, because he is simply running away from everything, and has no idea where he is going, or what he is doing. He starts chapter three by saying, “I’m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It’s awful. If I’m on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and someone asks me where I’m going, I’m liable to say I’m going to the opera. It’s terrible.” (p. 19). This is incredibly hypocritical of Holden, as he seems to act as though he has risen above all of the phonies, and that is his reason for escaping them. Throughout the entire book, because doesn’t plan ahead, he is constantly finding himself in situations where he is fabricating grandiose lies, and these do not support his supposed ideals. The only truths he seems interested in seeking are those having to do with the ducks in Central Park. “I was wondering where all of the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over. I wondered if some guy came in a truck and took them to a zoo or something. Or if they just flew away.” (p. 16). And even though he asks many people where the ducks go, like the cab driver Horwitz for example, and actually goes to the pond and looks for the ducks, he is not actively pursuing the reason for the ducks’ disappearance, because he could have easily gone to a library and checked out a book on ducks while he was waiting around, and found out for himself where they went.
