Soccer has been traced down to around 3000 years ago but the exact origin of the game has not been found. Outside the United States, soccer is known as football; the claim to the name football was taken in America, leaving it with the name soccer. The international game practiced by children and adults alike, exposing themselves to the manipulation of their bodies to brave the wind and control the ball with their feet, the game that is known as soccer.

It was played in the way desired by the group of persons playing the game. “Many American colleges played soccer, but there was no intercollegiate competition. Rules were casual and changed often” (“U.S. soccer timeline”). The game was still played with hands and although small rules were in place it was far from the soccer we see today. The game was not regarded as a set game till 1863 when the game’s set of rules were finally created and accepted by London situated schools. 11 schools came together to form the football association, widely known as FA (in this situation football refers to soccer). “Firmly establishing the foundation of soccer in 1869, the Football Association strictly banned any kind of handling of the ball.” (History of Soccer”). The banning of hands were not in the set rules and the banning of hands from soccer made soccer extremely different and made it stand as a sport for the feet. There were several factors that played into why I chose to attend Truett-McConnell. I have played soccer since I was five years old and ever since I started I had a dream to play college soccer. My dream was to play soccer at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. My aunts, uncles, both grandparents, mom, dad, and now older brother have all attended Samford. Going there would have been fantastic but God had other plans for me.

Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 BC. In about 200 AD the Romans played a game in which two teams tried to score by advancing a ball across a line on the field. The Romans passed the ball to one another but they never kicked it. London children in about 1100 played a form of soccer in the streets. During the 1800’s the people of England played a game similar to soccer. Many rules changed and each person interpreted the rules differently. It was a gloomy day, Hurricane Hermine blew past Greenville leaving behind scattered puddles across campus as well as lingering clouds blocking most of the sunlight. The air was cool yet there was a certain electricity present that made that day feel less dreary. It was the first home college football game, East Carolina University was going to play against Western Carolina University. The two institutions haven’t played each other since 1981 and it was sure to be an interesting match up, football season was back in full swing and this match would define the success to come for the home team.
