With the first ever recorded match of Australian Rules football in 1858 between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School, Thomas Wills in 1858 upon his return from England proposed that a similar game to English Rugby League could be used to keep cricket players fit through the winter season. The rules of Australian Football League (AFL) are still ambiguous from when Thomas Wills who set up the foundation rules for which are still being used today, [1]. However, the rules were not followed very well and sometime today still are not followed, with Colden Harrison who became a figure head for the administration of the game unwaveringly said that ‘football is essentially a rough game all over the world and is not suitable for men-poodles and milk sops’ [1]. As the game became more rough and dangerous with players regularly being tripped, punched and kicked, charged or tackling behind play, taking officials centuries to rid the game of this unsportsman ship like behavior.
The Australian football’s teams came in a staggered fashion with the major Melbourne and Victorian teams coming first with the Geelong football club being the first in 1859 and other major teams in 1896 with Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Melbourne, StKilda and south Melbourne. With South Melbourne eventually becoming the Sydney Swans. Other teams outside of Victoria joined the Australian football League in 1987 with the addition of West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears, later Fitzroy and Brisbane Bears Merging to create Brisbane Lions. Then came the final editions of Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney [1], completing the full 18 teams that play today.

This shows the consistency of Carlton and their ability to remain reliable with eleven wins and eleven losses when compared to the unreliability and inconsistency of Melbourne with their twenty losses and only two wins. With the statistics from figures 1.4 and 1.5 of the Carlton Vs Melbourne football game held in 2013 it can be seen that the strength of the Carlton football club dominated for the majority of the game with the majority of contested possessions, inside fifties and hit outs. Showing the strengths of the Carlton football club and their ability to support and help young rising star athletes to grow.
