Critique: His Last Vow (Sherlock) “His Last Vow” is the series three finale of the popular show “Sherlock” on BBC One UK. Co-written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as self proclaimed sociopath and consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson, Amanda Abbington as Mary Morstan-Watson, and Lars Mikkelsen as Charles Augustus Magnussen. The episode aired on January 11, 2014. The show centers around Sherlock Holmes and his quest for knowledge and the satisfaction of solving another case. Before meeting John, Sherlock was antisocial and disliked by virtually everyone around him. In the scene where Sherlock was unconscious and dreaming of being in a cell with Moriarty, Andrew Scott delivered an oscar worthy performance. His actions in combination with his words made him out to be truly mentally unhinged. His sinister adaptation of “it’s raining, it’s pouring” was a nice touch and added to the feeling of madness. Benedict Cumberbatch was also outstanding in his depiction of Sherlock Holmes. After being shot by Mary, it was clear that he was in agony, yet he was still able to give himself the best chance of survival by deciding whether it was better to fall on his back or his front and keeping himself from going into shock. This was very true to character, as Sherlock’s mind never actively stops working. He speaks in a quiet tone of voice most of the time and makes only small movements and gestures, which adds to the air of mystery that surrounds him. John tends to speak a bit louder, especially when angry or upset. His gestures are usually bigger and more dramatic. He is very forgiving, which is proven beyond a doubt when he is willing to forget Mary’s violent past and admits that he still loves
