Hip replacement surgery replaces diseased or damaged parts of a hip joint with man made parts. Although this procedure has a high success rate, every surgery has risks and complications and this is no different. Here are some of the likely problems that may result from this procedure

Dislocation of the hip

This is one of the most common complications from this surgery. It usually takes around 3 months for the soft tissue that form the joint to completely heal. Before the muscle strength returns, the hip may dislocate especially if the patient has a weak muscle tone. If the surgeon cuts less tissue while performing the surgery, the risk of dislocation is substantially reduced. The patient is also advised to maintain certain postures in the …show more content…

Patients with other underlying conditions are the ones who are most likely to develop an infection from the surgery. The doctors usually give patients antibiotics to reduce the chances of superficial, primary or late onset infection. Patients who develop any infections should be quick to report it to the doctor.

Blood clots

After the surgery, blood clots may form in the leg veins. If the clot travels to the lung it can cause a pulmonary embolism which is lethal but unlikely. If the blood clot instead forms in the leg it may lead to deep vein thrombosis. Patients are usually prescribed to anticoagulant and some exercises to prevent and manage clotting. A patient who notices clotting should immediately see the doctor.

Misalignment and Loosening of the Implant

This is common especially if the surgery is not done perfectly. This can cause wear and tear and even pain to the patient. This complication can simply be avoided by getting an experienced surgeon to perform the hip replacement. It is good to note that even an experienced surgeon may miss the mark so one needs to be prepared for all outcomes. Loosening of the implant may also be caused by poor bones or traumatic force to the hip. Loosening usually happens in the long-term. In case the patient suspects that the implant is misaligned or loosened they should ask for corrective …show more content…

There is usually no pain involved except the inability to walk normally. If this happens the doctor can correct the problem by prescribing medication or using radiotherapy. This complication is quite rare if the surgery is done with precision.

Risk on the adjacent bones

If the implant is not positioned accurately, it can cause a fracture around the prosthetic stem. The prosthetic stem can also break due to extreme force or product failure. The thighbone can also fracture if the surgeon uses poor equipment or if the patient has an underlying bone condition. Any fractures caused by the surgery can easily be fixed without any harm to the hip bone.

Abnormal Reactions

Although allergies to metal implants are rare, they are still plausible. During surgery the metals used can cause tissue reactions especially if the surgery is not done correctly. The sensitivity to the metal in the implants may cause patients to develop certain symptoms such as inflammation. In other cases it may cause the hip not to heal. The patient may overlook these symptoms as they sometimes appear unrelated. Patients are therefore encouraged to report to the doctor any symptoms that they notice after surgery, however unrelated they may be. The doctor can quickly correct an allergy reaction to the
