Hindu Belief in Respect for All Living Creatures

"Ahimsa is the highest darm. Ahimsa is the best tapas. Ahim says the

greatest gift. Ahimsa is the highest self-control. Ahimsa is the

highest sacrifice. Ahimsa is the highest power. Ahimsa is the highest

friend. Ahimsa is the highest truth. Ahimsa is the highest teaching".

Mahabharat 18. 116.37-41.

A powerful quote from the Mahabharat explaining the goodness of Ahimsa

and how good it is. The prospect is very sacred to a Hindu, as it is

the sole rule that revolves around their lives "Carry out Ahimsa".

Ahimsa actually means, 'non-violence', and is a strong belief across

many Hindu's.

Sanatan dharma is the eternal religion - Hinduism. Hindu belief

revolves around the idea of there being a supreme being called

Bhraman, the ultimate reality from which everything comes from.

Sanatan dharma refers mainly to principles of; Ahimsa, saya (truth),

asteya (not stealing), sauca (purity) and control of the senses. Every

Hindu hopes for its Atman (soul) to merge once again with Brahman,

thus having complete liberation from the cycle of life, death and

rebirth other wise known as Samsara. This for of liberation is called

attaining 'Moksha', and can be achieved by carrying out duties, or by

attaining good 'karma' at the end of a life. Karma is the law and

cause of effect, by your actions. For Hindu's, carrying out actions of

murder and violence results in attainment of bad karma. As animals and

all other living creatures are part of Bhraman it is wrong to kill

them. Good Karma can be achieved by following righteous Hindu

principles such as Ahimsa, and a significant amount of good karma may

result in the Atman achieving Moksha.

For thousands of years Hindu's have followed the principle of not

harming other creatures because of their belief in Ahimsa. The

Mahabharat, Tirukaral and the Bhagvat Gita also have many reasons as

to why there should be non-violence in this world. Without Ahimsa,

this severe amount of Karma damages the soul, preventing it to become
