High School Sports vs. Academics Kobe Bryant once said, “Sports are such a great teacher. I think of everything they’ve taught me: camaraderie, humility, how to resolve differences.” At most high schools in America, sports a part of the curriculum to teach students useful life skills to prepare them for their educational outcomes. High school athletics have a significantly important impact on students by teaching them social skills, responsibility, and determination. “During the first year of the program, students were found to be less likely to transfer schools or be engaged in violent crimes” (Source 1). In other words, learning from your mistakes and making the correct choice will allow you to stay focused and experience new things. All high school sports require a certain grade point average in order to participate in the physical activity. When a student recieves good grades, they are rewarded with the ability to play with the rest of the team. Additionally, I have learned that constructive criticism allows me to learn from my mistakes and take into account what will make me a better gymnast. For example, when a teacher corrects me on my mistakes, I immediately take action to expand my knowledge, thus becoming a well rounded student. Ken Marschner (Excutive Director of United Bank of Switzerland) said, “We try to recruit people that can work in a team environment, are competitive and driven and it is not a pre-requisite, but many times athletes have those traits” (Source 4). In other words, athletes have these traits due to their sport environment; in addition, athletes are hard workers that are driven to accomplish many things in life. Athletes are determined to do well for a match, and are determined just as much, to do well in school. Furthermore, “Teens who were active in school activities, had hobbies or jobs, were found to be most likely to succeed at their chosen profession and make creative contributions to their community” (Source 6). This means that those who had activities to do in high school, was the reason why they are committed to achieving what is best for them.
