“Title” Some people tell me “Sports make the world go round”, and I reply with “I’m positive making the world go round is gravity's job”. The focus of the world should be on first world problems such as global warming and poverty, not on who won the Stanley Cup. Sports are burglars in children’s lives but, instead of stealing belongings they steal attention and instead of breaking lamps they fracture bones. The ‘takeover’ of sports begins when you are at a young age. Throughout your adolescent years, your parents encourage/force you to play sports. All baseball and soccer player were seen as the cool kids and everyone wanted to be like them. The influence of sports is forced upon you since your childhood. One helps you manage your health and the other sets you on a path for a great future. You can play soccer anytime but the opportunity of knowledge does not always knock on your door. In “What in the name of High School Football” by Hank Hill a word is mentioned ‘athletocracy’. That word mean athletics have more power or popularity then any other activity. The word ‘athletocracy’ can be accurately represented in T.D baker School as well. As most know, T.D. Baker School holds an annual basketball tournament, better known as Big Dawg. Not to be a negative nancy but, Big Dawg took away from vital learning time. Not only did it take time away from students who sat and watched it but, basketball itself takes time away from anyone who plays it. In the video “Sports: How Much Is Too Much?” Andre Gregory say “It’s a very difficult thing, studying and going to practice at nine”. Studies and sports approximately acquire the same amount of attention, but education deserves the attention. You can always play hockey, but you can not always go back to grade 8 math class to learn what the pythagorean theorem is. A ‘not so smart athlete’ once said “What diverts you from your studies, hurts your studies”. The ‘not so smart athlete’ did not pay much attention in school, hence the name ‘not so smart athlete’, he learned from his mistakes.
