Many people believe that in order to see someones true self, see how they act when they're put in a postion of power. How they treat others around and beneath them, and their ability to lead others well are sought after traits of a leader. I'd like to think I'd proven myself a good leader and person when I was a junior and then senior captain on my high school wrestling team. My experiences with senior leadership on the team while I was an underclassmen helped shape my eventual leadership. The captains my freshmen and sophmore year were'nt really leaders, they were just good wrestlers. They didn't lead or inspire us, they just did their own thing. The underclassmen didn't respect them, we were just afraid of these bigger and older people. Growing up with that I knew I wanted to be different. …show more content…

I didn't have the self confidence to tell kids to stop goofing off or to do their stretching correctly. There were a few kids in the group that really didn't take order very well. I was falling into the same type of leader as the people who were in charge my freshmen and sophmore year. After a heartbreaking loss to a rival, that all changed. We lost a match we shouldn't have to a school not as good as us. We were sitting in the locker room, and my coach made the simple point that we werent really a team yet. It hit me he was right, and that a team needs leadership. As an elected leader it was my job and duty to make sure we were ready to meet our challenges for the rest of the year. I started making sure the team wasn't goofing off, that they did their stretches right, and were ready to go when game time happened. I dealt with those kids that were causing problems, and it lead to a more streamlined team. My self confidence wasn't a problem anymore, and I felt the respect of my fellow upperclassmen and also the
