As the trio became more incited by the drugs and comfortable with him, DHC (the base ingredient of pepper spray) was blown into one gang members eyes. While in a surprised daze a smaller member received a hard blow in his windpipe, disabling his breathing. Then suddenly Teddy threw a kerosene filled balloon at the third, threatened him with a lighter, and demanded answers about his sister’s shooting.
Joe-Boy jumped from a fifty foot precipice, he said ‘’watch how a man does it’’ to Vinny. Joe-Boy didn’t even worry about what might happen. That would have to take some real guts because I know I would never have be able it. Even though he is brave, he can be a real bully to Vinny. Finally, the man reached his destination: the gym, where a class a kindergartners were having P.E. In the gym, he pulled out the guns and started picking off the five-year-olds one by one. The room was splattered with blood as young children broke like porcelain dolls under the power of the gun. The blood continued to flow, but the intruder did not stop; he took careful aim to make sure he didn't miss. The final insult came when he shot the teacher who was shielding kids with her body. Once he killed her, he killed the kids she was protecting. When he finished in the gym , he turned around walked out, shot at a class as he walked down the hall and walked out into the courtyard. In the courtyard, the killer ended the ordeal by taking his own life (Pederson).
What is a school? “A school is a place where instruction is given, to individuals under college age or of college age (21 +).” (School, 2014). Who are teachers, teachers are leaders of their own individual classroom whom acquire knowledge from an institute to teach. Who are students, students are individuals who attend a school to obtain knowledge of the world surrounding them enhancing themselves of basic skills such as reading, mathematics, science, and history. So what is a School Improvement Plan? A School Improvement Plan is a plan for schools to ensure that their students are achieving, whether that being supplementary activities, additional minority in upper level courses, or even accessing more parental involvement to overall provide for better schooling.
It was a lovely September morning of 2007 and I was fresh out of Teacher’s College. Naturally, everything was “beautiful” and “wonderful” as I walked into the large, stone building at 7:15 in the morning. I enjoy looking at my life in retrospect; I know that my sole purpose for getting to school that early was to be able to sit back and start my day on a peaceful note. The hidden purpose was to avoid students and other teachers for as long as possible. Why?
College is an important decision to parents, but teenagers are more focused on social lives, rather than their careers. It is a difficult task to understand what their major should be, but more so where they are going to go to study that major. High school influence is the main factor which students base their college choice on, but the activities students choose in school effect where they go more than their out of school activities.
As discussed in class, discourse is our communication. Furthermore, author James Paul Gee of “What is Literacy” defines discourse as an “identity kit” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). Gee includes discourse as a combination of one’s thinking, acting, and language that is associated to a group of others. There are different kinds of discourses; two discourses that will be discussed in this paper are primary and secondary. Primary discourse is the “oral mode developed in the primary process of enculturation” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). The primary discourse in this paper is the first-person experience I had in high school. Secondary discourse is “developed in association with and by having access to and practice with these secondary institutions” (Gee, “What is Literacy?”). School, work, and church are examples of secondary institutions. The secondary discourse in the paper is attending the University of Arkansas and writing this paper. According to Gee, “secondary discourse can serve as a meta-discourse to critique the primary discourse…” (“What is Literacy?”). Throughout this process I wanted to know if high school is destined. Was my high school experience awful or is there a sociological reasoning behind the events? With that, I have researched the social construct and applied it to my previous experiences enabling me to truly discover if high school is destined.
Home schooling is another way for a child to receive his or her education. It is one of many alternatives to regular schooling (classrooms and schools). It is the oldest alternatives to regular schooling and one of the most effective. There are many true stories proving that home schooling is an effective and often successful way to teach you child. The senior year of high school, what a pivotal time in a person’s life. Jim Swarthow was a senior as average as any other of his time. He grew up in an average sized town in Tennessee, and attended a high school with the population of 1,200 students. As a student he made fair grades, yet never cracked a book when he left the doors of school heading home. School was not very important to Jim because his father had him helping the family business at a very young age. Although he never failed any courses in his school career, he never excelled either.

It was the summer going into 9th grade and my little cousin Gianna had just turned one. The birthday party was Elmo themed and the big red monster was everywhere. It was a beautiful summer day for a back yard party. The tables were set up with red tablecloths and bright colored confetti. Each table also had a blow with a real gold fish it. But the best part about the party was the bounce house set way back in the yard, because no matter how old you are your never to old for a bounce house. But unfortunately I couldn’t go on it with all the little kids, so other then the bounce house it was a pretty boring party. There were tons of screaming kids, half of which I didn’t no. A bunch of old aunts and uncles that sat in their chairs, and the other half of the people I didn’t even know who they where. Therefore I wasn’t having the best time.
High-school: some kids go to class, some kids go to parties, some kids go Harvard, and other kids drop out. No two kids are the same… that is what makes high school the unique and interesting place that it is. A high school caters to the wants and needs of a large variety of student types. Walking down the hall, you notice a pack of girls chomping on their gum and texting (not inconspicuously) with their football playing suitors dragging along behind – the preps; a group of boys with their glasses pushed well up the bridge of their noses, conspiring about the Big Bang or the derivative of the cubed root of the sine of two pi – the super nerds; and somewhere, running between the other clans, books piled high, scholarship applications flying off the top of their stack, are the stressed-out, college-bound overachievers. It is later that I am concerned about. The way that these college-bound overachievers interpret the expectations of college causes them to lead hectic, stressful lifestyles.
Throughout your life you will find that you do not always excel at everything you had once thought you would. Failure is tough to overcome, but once defeated, it is truly rewarding. In my case, failure taught me that it is possible to get back up and always improve, no matter the circumstance. As an eighth grade student, I was lucky enough to choose which high school in my district I would like to attend. I had chosen to apply for a newly founded school, the stem school, concentrating on science technology, engineering, and math. In order to apply to this school, you had to have had an A in all math and science classes, have letters of recommendations from your math and science teachers, and pass a test. Countless students expect the natural progression from high school to university life to be the same as the one they had while at secondary school. These students are wrong to assume this and will quickly realize these present major changes. University costs more, presents more academic challenges, and offers a greater social environment than high school.
Having spent twelve years of my school life in just one small red brick building, the years tend to fade into each other. But the year I remember most clearly and significantly is my senior year of high school, where I finally began to appreciate what this institution offered to any student who stopped to look. Before, school had been a chore, many times I simply did not feel motivated toward a subject enough to do the homework well, and seeing the same familiar faces around ever since I was 5 years old grew very tiring soon enough. But I began to see things from a different angle once I became a senior.
